CANCELING the results of a New Hampshire election because of snow is like canceling the results of a Chicago Cubs game because of wind. It fails to pass the laugh test. Yet snow is the excuse the Hooksett School Board has given to justify a revote on the school budget, which failed by five votes in March.

The March 8 defeat of the board?s proposed budget meant that Hooksett schools would have to fall to a default budget. To prevent that, the school board revised the budget proposal and has scheduled another election. The official reason for the revote is that bad weather caused unusually low turnout the first time. The real reason is that the budget failed.

Ironically, the board scheduled the new vote for the day after Memorial Day, which might produce an even lower turnout than in March.

Hooksett?s school board is following in the footsteps of Bedford?s school board, which manipulated elections involving a new town high school and tuition contract with Manchester until it got the results it wanted. Last year, after Bedford residents rejected a proposed Bedford high school, the board scheduled a new vote on the tuition contract for the day after Memorial Day.

If Hooksett?s school budget passes next week, look for more school boards to call for revotes by citing reasons such as bad weather and low turnout. But don?t hold your breath waiting for revotes when elections turn out the way school boards want.

This is New Hampshire not Arizona. It snows here. I don't recall a state of emergency in March with people trapped in their houses.

Just more manipulation of the system :'(

So what's a guy with some time on his hands to do that day?
Any contact info?

I already have a generic VOTE NO shirt made.  Is that the right answer for this vote?

Gee, if the vote had gone the school board's way, do you think there would have been a revote?  This sucks.
