QuoteOne Cook County commissioner wants to increase the county's portion of the sales tax, and if approved, the sales tax in Cook County would go up to 11 percent. That tax increase would also apply to restaurant and hotel bills.
Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy said the additional tax revenue would be used to avoid another crisis when it is time to come up with next year's budget.
...
"If they support some other revenue increase, then, that could help fill the gap. But maybe we still would need a sales tax, but as stated maybe not two percent, maybe 2.5 percent. We need to make sure we keep the system going," said County Board President Todd Stroger.

Thats just an unbelievable amount of sales tax...  I think my 6% is bad enough.

We don't have a 'sales tax', but we have the VAT which was recently raised from 24 to 25%.

Along with a 'progressive' income tax which comes up to around 40% if you have a decent income.

I didn't live in Cook County, but this is precisely why I left the People's Republic of Illinois.

Educrats are pushing to raise the state income tax from 3% to 5%.  In a living testament to the educational bankruptcy of government schools, they call it a "2% increase".  The excuses are the same ones used in NH to push the frivolous education lawsuits and HB927.

Anybody thinking of supporting the centralization of education needs to take a hard look at Illinois (and many other states) to see that no amount of money will ever satisfy the education thugs.

my math says it is a 66% increase.

Little Owl

Quotemy math says it is a 66% increase.

Mine says 67%.  (Rule of thumb: ALWAYS round tax increases up.  If they're not there now, they soon will be!)

Fluff and Stuff

Sweet, that will give it the highest sales tax rate in the nation (afask).  Gotta love IL.

ThePug

Even in New York City, possibly home of the most bloated government in the nation, they only have a 8.375% sales tax. 11%?  :o That's insane.

Little Owl

11% is "insane" today.  In 15 years people will be saying "How about 15%?  After all, its only a little larger than the 11% standard"

True

When I lived in CA... the people voted to keep the tax at 8.75% rather than the 8.50%  you see a little money can do a lot.   ::)

Quoteyou see a little money can do a lot.

I've always been amazed at people's willingness to believe in the paradoxical tax increase that is so large that government cannot do without, yet small enough that you shouldn't even notice.
