It's not the first method we've seen for blinding security cameras, but this new DIY / art project from the folks at Oberwelt e.V. looks to be one of the simplest, and one of the few that could conceivably be used on an everyday basis. Dubbed the I-R.A.S.C. (for "infra-redlight against surveillance camera"), the device apparently consists simply of a series of infrared lights connected to a battery, which combine to blot out your face with a slightly unnerving glow. Needless to say, while it appears to hide your identity quite effectively, it doesn't exactly scream subtlety, so you'd best think of some excuses to explain yourself if you actually plan on trying this thing out in public.

Kind of looks like the "oracle" at the subway station.  :D

I ran across this article too.  Unfortunately, this trick would only work against infrared cameras: cameras collecting visible light would be unaffected by an infrared light source.

Not so. All digital cameras detect infrared light. You can try it by pointing a remote control at your webcam.

I'm thinking that Ultraviolet might be even more effective?
Photon energy, actinic light and all of that.

You've got people on these boards screaming about killer barium from the skies and all that jazz, and you wanna pitch UV? Know your audience :-P

You're the camera expert here, Puke, but it's my understanding that most digital cameras employ infrared filters, which would block out the light from the LED.

I don't know much about security cameras, but I assume they are similar to digital cameras. From the pics in in the story it appears to work though.

I don't know why you would have to explain it to anyone, but, you could claim you were treating Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Here is another way to hide your face from cameras,
low tech.

Plus that one is good because if they stop you, you can just tell them, "I am not a crook"

Russell Kanning

cool ... you could build it into a stocking cap
or wear the v mask or nixon mask :)

The infrared lights are not visible to the naked eye, unlike a mask.
To any other person it just looks like you have a silly hat with LEDs.

I wonder if they would tear through my tinfoil?

No. Tinfoil is impermeable to all but the most resilient of particle waves such as Gamma and Hawking radiation.
