Anyone have experience establishing a 501(c)(3)?

Hi folks!

I'm starting to plot out a project to gather private, voluntary funding for the $825,000 expansion of the Merrimack South Fire Station which was voted down in April.

In order to do this, I'm planning to establish a 501(c)(3) public charity.

I've got leads on the IRS forms, but I'm wondering if anyone has any detailed experience in founding and operating a 501(c)(3) and would be willing to give me any pointers about the process.

Mike Fisher is doing one for the Liberty Scholarship fund also.

It's supposed to take 3 months to get 501c3 status, but good luck waiting for their current "4 to 10 month delay" in processing.
