Well, thanks guys for the help so far.  We're planning on spending a few days up there over the Christmas holidays, to get a feel for what the winter has to offer.

Please keep the info coming. ;D

A friend of mine from Colorado is getting irked at the number of people moving from California for "something nicer" and then turning it into Califonia Jr. Much in the same way the NH people are contending with the big government folks. The upside?

There's no "Big Government State Project". ;) It only stands to get better in NH, the migrations to push liberty-minded folk out is already happening everywhere else!

I'm sitting here thinking "wow" when you guys toss up single digit tax rates. :( Between the Federal goons and the State I loose 62% of my total income. :(

Yeah.  We call them Californicators here, and they are fucking up the place a bit.  I always like to hope that the people leaving are the ones that are fleeing the oppression; sort of like the people from Mass escaping there to come to NH.  Now, many are the crazy tax and spenders, and that seems to be having an effect up there also.  Last election cycle, you guys took a beating.

Well,  I'm still looking for land up there.  30+ acres with or with out a house.  The problem with that is that just having house + land seems to increase the raping in property taxes as opposed to just a small, new house on say an acre.

There is a great network of people in NH as opposed to the many states we looked at moving to about 10 years ago when we escaped NYC. Not just on this site but all over. You being a gun nut like me will find NH very accommodating to your passion. When you move here I can introduce you to all the right people and take you to a few weekend shoots where you'll meet people who will shoot with you 7 days a week if you choose. Taxes are a bit oppressive especially property taxes but compared to other places its still relatively low. I lived in CO for a while and absolutely loved it there especially the western part of the state. I really loved the dunes out on the Utah border where we took our quads out pretty much every weekend. But in the end NH is home. We just recently bought another 100 acres for 85K in Westmoreland which is outside of Keene. It seems land is pretty cheap in this area and you'll only be about ten minutes from Keene which will give you everything you need. But buy as much land as you can afford in an area where you don't have any neighbors, you'll be able to do what you want in terms of shooting, etc without being bothered. Good luck, and if you need anything feel free.

Amen, brother.

Wonderful way to put it.

Is this true, or are you just saying this? I agree that we pay way too much in taxes, but I think 62% is just another libertarian exaggeration.

I heard that years ago they did the same thing with Oregon, and that's how Oregon and Portland got to be the way they are today.

I'm in the 25% bracket federally, and the People's Republik Of Maryland equals that so that's 50% gone off the bat. There's a 6% state sales tax. There's a 3.8% county income tax. My electricity, phone bill and internet have taxes mixed in. And I commute 110 miles each do to get to and from work, and something like 30% of the cost of gas is tax in Maryland.

So even without the hidden taxes, I'm absolutely sure I spend LESS than half of the money I earn.

Wait a minute here! Your state income tax is 25%? That's impossible!

I think state income taxes should be abolished, but you're doing yourself no favors by inventing libertarian fish stories of 25% state income taxes.

Income tax information

QuoteFor tax year 2007, the Maryland income tax rate is set at 4.75 percent and it applies to the taxable income of residents and nonresidents who derive income from a Maryland source. Nonresidents are subject to a special nonresident tax rate of 1.25 percent, in addition to the 4.75 percent rate, for an effective tax rate of 6 percent.

Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City also levy a local income tax, which is collected on the resident state tax return as a convenience to local governments...

I Googled a few Maryland counties and the max marginal county income tax rate for those I found was 3.2%

QuoteThere's no "Big Government State Project".

There was one in the 70s and 80s. It's now called "Vermont" (although in NH we prefer the term "control group").

Yes there is. It's in North Korea.  ;)

No, it's in mAssachusetts. Free Lunch Project.

J'raxis you hit the nail on the head. Free lunch project with slimy stinky raccoons. Unfortunately, that's what most people are nowadays. They all want their universal health care and welfare and social security and all that other garbage and they want to take the money for it out of other people's pockets. Well even if we live in a nation of 300,000,000 raccoons, and only 500 porcupines, I want you 500 folks to keep on being porcupines, 'hear?
