Which ocean is 'the' ocean?

I just need to know where we're going.

So I can make plans... ya know, if it's my turn on 'Take JJ to the ocean day'.

My parents had me fooled for years telling me Long Island Sound was the Ocean

Thalassophobia

This is how I predict it will happen when Sandy takes me to see the sea.

(Scene - Blue sky; windy day)
JJ:  Sandy, what manner of witchcraft is this?  It is as if the sky has over taken the land and it rages.

Sandy: Thats the ocean JJ.

J: This ocean - it appears to be in a constant struggle with the land.  Time and again attempting to swallow the land and yet the land denies it, remaining steadfast.

S: Yeah those are waves.  Didn't you say you lived less than a mile from Lake Michigan?

(James moves closer to the water)
J: Is it sentient?  Does it see in color.

S: What?...

this is what I imagine it will look like:

Pat McCotter

My boys had the opposite experience. They were raised near the ocean and I took them to a beach on Lake Michigan.

"Hey! It's not salty!"

Whew, I count myself lucky.  I have been to the ocean once, saw it for 15 minutes, literally dipped my finger in it to taste it, then left (busy that day).

This Chicago boy didn't see the ocean 'til I was past 30. 17 if you let me count the Gulf of Mexico at Galveston, TX (sticklers don't let me).

Mountains and curvy roads still seem weird too.

Russell Kanning

I m a landlubber and enjoy mountains .... but even I have been in the ocean .... better go quick JJ ... or we will be forced by Shire Law to throw you in.

Is that how the Cardinal of the Shire performs baptisms?  By throwing 'em in?   ;D

He said, "Throw 'em all in and let God sort 'em out".
