The mod. 500 was a fairly common phone when I was a kid.  One of my neighbors had an older model that weighed a ton and had the nicest, fine, rachet in the dial. ticity, ticity, ticity, ticity, ticity

We had a bright red Ericophone for years.  It was the coolest looking phone ever made. When you held the button in you could hear the local rock station up the road.

My family had a rotary phone up till the early 90's I believe.
My Dad's a bit of a luddite.  :-\

C'mon, Lloyd. When you were a kid, this was the standard model:

Yeah you could use those old heavy plastic
ones to beat a biker gang to death. Then
just dial up your number as it would not
have sustained any damage.

Actually, I'm combining the old tech with the new:

You rock, Lloyd!

(Totally off topic but I recall when I was like 7 or 8 years old, a summer camp I went to had "Smoke signals" on the list of activities and lessons and I never got to do it because of two tornados. The internet is so much cooler though, so I'm over it!)

I recall it was at Porcupine Freedom Fest last year when someone's cell phone rang and they had the "ring" tone set so that it was loud and sounded just like an olde rotary phone.
It was quite funny to hear some youngin convincingly exclaim, "What the hell was that?"

I'm going to have to do that. As soon as I find a microphone.

My LG phone (several years old) has that ringtone built in. I left it as the default ring for anyone not on my list.
