whenever i mention that i plan to homeschool my children, 99% of all people react with shock, and suddenly decide that it is their business to talk me out of it. is it just me?

It's just the people you're hanging out with. They don't sound too bright. Probably went to public school.

Watch the national spelling bees. Mostly won by home schooled kids. If you hear about someone who graduated college at 19 or even 17, bet good money they were home schooled.

"Public school students outnumber homeschoolers 40 to 1, but, in the 2007 Scripps Spelling Bee, U.S. public school students captured only 5 of the top slots — the same number as homeschoolers. Perhaps public schools are teeming with brilliant spellers who mysteriously decided to stay away from the competition in droves. Again. Or maybe it has something to do with the educational freedom homeschoolers enjoy…."

If all logic fails, just tell them Dennis Miller was home schooled. Yes, he talks about it in Raw Feed but it doesn't say anything about it on his Wikipedia page it only says where he graduated high school. Many kids like some of my brothers and sisters were home schooled most of the time but attended public school for 1 or 2 years just to get a diploma.

Dennis Miller is a very smart guy and I've been a long time fan of his comedy, I just wish he found libertarianism instead of clinging to his statist beliefs.

Much to my surprise I haven't had any negative reactions in NH but I did in Maryland.  When people ask the kids if they have the day off from school when we're out the kids tell them that they are home schooled. So far people have said things like, lucky you, that's great, if I have kids I'm home schooling them too, etc. :)

We are considering private high schools for our oldest. It's been pretty interesting seeing the reactions of admissions people. Some have been downright hostile to homeschooling, notably on "socialization." Others welcome it, have successful former-homeschoolers already, and actually value the increase of the diversity in their student body.

Yeah and that "little socialist tip" as you call it is nothing (socialism wise) compared to The Peoples Socialist Democracy of Taxachusetts.

I met a nice group of communists that want to move all their friends to NH and make it more "livable"

they even think using the quote "we shall overcome" will work for them in the Seacoast area.

I'm starting to think it's just an extension of Massholechusetts.

Thankfully plenty of Porcupines are moving into that area to counter their influence.

Hey! I'm in the Seacoast area, I am a single Mom who runs her own business AND I homeschool, AND I always get positive reactions when I share with people that I am homeschooling. It may be their perception of you. I would say throw their lack of respect of your abilities back in their faces.

Here are some goodies for starters:

"Well, I just don't feel there is enough discussion of drugs in the public school system, I'd like to really drum it into my little one's head."

"I'd like my child to grow up in a repressive environment, where critical thinking is discouraged; public schools mostly achieve that, but I want to take it all the way."

"I feel the peer pressure and horrific school-yard tactics, and the sewer they label a busride just aren't enough of that boot-camp style mentallity I'd like to lodge into my children."

"They just don't offer the kinds of classes I'd like my child to be schooled in, like pornography and bomb-making."

ALWAYS follow with a smile.
