Police arming Newcastle, WA residents with radar guns

Residents in Newcastle who complain that drivers are speeding through their neighborhoods will now be able to prove it. Newcastle police are arming residents with radar guns.

"We all have little kids and they're riding their bikes in the street and running around and we all get in a big hurry to get out kids here and there and not be late for appointments or whatever," said Cheryl Coupens, one of the first people to sign up for the program.

When civilians clock someone speeding, they jot down the vehicle information and pass it along to authorities. There is no fine because the radar is not being operated by commissioned officers, but owners of the speeding vehicles do get a warning letter.

The first person to check out one of those radar guns used it in a residential neighborhood near Newcastle Elementary School. Over the course of three days she caught 72 people who were speeding. Of those, about a quarter was going more than 10 miles faster than the posted speed limit.

If they are indeed RADAR and not a newer speed measuring device I wonder if anyone told them about the cancer danger?

There were a lot of cops that ended up with cancers because they placed the radar guns in their laps when they were not aiming them

It was true. There were a number of cops that came down with testicular cancer that some police unions claimed was the result of putting radar guns in the lap while in the cruiser. Google cop cancer radar and read for yourself.

The newer radar guns are instant on, with dead man switches so that a activated radar gun can't fry their nads. There are newer technologies that have made radar less common. The cruiser mounted units are there because of the cancer concern. The trick is you have to make sure to mount the array so it isn't shooting a microwave beam at someone sitting in the cruiser.

Preventing radiation exposure has really taken off in the RF field. When I was a younger man I worked on radio transmitters, and we never gave a thought to getting up on a tower when the station was broadcasting. Now it is a whole different world. Power down, protective clothing, and other measures are taken.
