That one's probably overkill for me.

I'd agree.  But seriously man: think twice (at least) before getting a RWD truck that you plan to drive in the snow.  Seriously.   8)

Oh, I have seriously taken that into consideration. Also, I'm not completely sure that truck is overkill for me. :) Giving it some thought. I'll need to take a look at one of those auctions.

I have one for sale but it may be out of your budget. 1996 F-350 diesel dually. It has a back seat that folds out into a bed, TV, DVD and an in-dash shortwave radio so you can listen to the world fall apart. I'd be willing to bring it to you as an excuse to finally get to NH. $9,000.00

How many miles on the truck?

If you can, you absolutely want to get all wheel drive or AWD.or 4WD, especially for any hills as well as driving on the roads that lead to and from Keene to Manchester for tracktion on the turns and hills....The first cars that come to mind when I think of these are Subaru.

Now Subaru does have a model that does sit lower like your car and it also has kind a of MINI pick up bed to it as well.(can't remember name, but I'm sure you'll see it) so you're still getting very good gas milage.  It just might be big enough for you, on the hauling end though...

Now if you want more of the Truck look/need more cargo carrying room, then I would recommend a Nissan Frontier.  It's a small pick up, and I think you can get 4 door cabs...allot of room considering it's still not a full size pick up.  It's 4WD and you would have allot more room to carry bigger stuff. I'd look to get one on the cheap, look at last years models, one with low miles, they drive smooth, they last forever.

You could always put really aggressive tread tires on the duallys and clamp skis on the front tires and have a turbo Snowcat from hell. ;D

their are 2 auctions in NH one in salem and the one i go to in manchester called capital auto auction look it up on line their are a few different types of vehicle some are green light which means you can take it for a ride and has some sort of warranty and then their are the cars, trucks  whatever where you get what you buy the gates open a few hours before auction and you can scope out the vehicles but i dont think you can open the hood. I usually go around and find a few cars im interested in then go get a number from the office people and go bid its fun even if you dont get the rig you want with the economy the way it is i hear theirs more vehicles than ever. If you know what to look for you can get some really good deals
I agree about buying a 2 wheel drive truck in NH  a 2 wheel drive truck in NH is about as useless as tits on a bull unless you put 300 pounds of sand in the back. front wheel drive and 4x4  the way to go in the northeast.

Thanx, Jose. Is anyone else interested in checking out these auctions? I sure would love to have another head to knock against, especially someone who knows something about trucks. I'd like to go to one very soon. I'll stick to 4wd or fwd.

Dale, great idea about the Auction.  I can't stop myself from recommending that you research heavily BEFORE you go so you know exactly what vehicle (types, models) you're looking for and also just exactly how much you're willing to spend for the vehicle, including having having low (great deal), avg. price and highest you willing to go, on each particular model

...again, know this before you go and you'll take the emotion out of buying anything that just happens to catch your eye...(or like you say and if you can), go with someone who really knows vehicles and they can help allot, on the spot.  Good Luck Amigo!

i like going to the auction we'll talk about it at jim & laurens on thanksgiving, but i am no mechanic or even close but i have had decent luck buying vehicles from the auction and its a good redneck way to spend a saturday.

OK, Dale, if you were to ask me what small truck I would buy, of all the trucks out there, that would be easy and I would only have one answer, no alternatives would do.

Toyota Tacoma.  It's a mid-size, they have 4 door and 1/2 cab models, reasonable gas milage, 4wd,  nice interiors, ride nice, nice looking and as close to 0  maint. as you can get.  Get one a year or two (?) old for super savings.

I went and looked at one and they are really nice. I may have to have one for my own self. For anybody interested I've drastically dropped the price on my truck to get the sale done. http://rockford.craigslist.org/cto/954969554.html

My dad really likes vans for their cargo space, usually the seats can be removed or folded down, and the two minivans he has had both had front wheel drive.  I want a hatchback car for the same reason.
