"the theory was if you were stupid enough to order top shelf vodka/liquor mixed with cranberry or any other juice you deserved to get burned"

John Stossel debunked the vodka snobs pretty well.

Bald Eagle

Lagavulin or Laphroig Islay-style Scotch whiskey.
McClelland's makes an Islay for 1/4 the price and a GREAT "lower-shelf" Scotch whiskey.

Jim Beam, Old Crow, Beefeater, Bombay, Stolichnaya, and cheeep tequila (Pepe Lopez, Tequila Zapata, etc).
Basically anything except vermouth and absinthe.

id like to chime in here.
i don't drink whiskey, i drink Yukon jack, a Canadian liqueur,  and let me tell you why. i worked in and around bars for over 10 years here in Rhode Island and the one thing Ive found in EVERY ONE of them is they all look to save money. i cant tell you how many times I've married bottles of peppermint schnapps into a rumpleminze bottle or Poland springs vodka into Belvedere or Grey goose bottles, or "admiral nelson" into Captain Morgan ...... lol... the theory was if you were stupid enough to order top shelf vodka/liquor mixed with cranberry or any other juice you deserved to get burned...... not my theory but one of many people ive worked for.......
the way i figure it if you go to a nightclub you are probably getting burned on expensive drinks. if you go to a small bar you have better chances of actually getting what you paid for, assuming you order top shelf.... the only way to avoid getting burned is to order bottled beer (draft is also switched on occasion, most regular beer i.e. bud, coors, etc will be cheap natural light or something, with only dark beer being real i.e. Guinness or Sam) or one of the very few liquors that cant be faked i.e. Yukon jack and Bombay Sapphire being the only two i can think of off hand. all other liquors have a "generic" version of themselves they get switched with, rums, vodkas, whiskeys, in my opinion they should all be suspect when your paying for it and its getting poured from an already opened bottle.
sometimes the giveaways of it happening are worn out bottle labels, or things like seeing an aftershock bottle with no sugar crystals in it because its been refilled with cheap cinnamon schnapps (30 proof) so many times.....lol
and for those saying "i would be able to tell if it was fake" you would be surprised. if you start you're night drink the fake stuff you almost never know, or if you finish you're night drink fake stuff you almost never know. it's usually only the people in the middle of the night who have come from other bars where they may have been drinking shots of rumpleminze all night (100 proof) and suddenly they get cheap peppermint schnapps that realize it. and if they did you would make nice with a couple freebies or worst case they suddenly became "unruly" and had to get thrown out.....lol... I'm not justifying it just telling the truth.
this is why i always choose Yukon jack because it is guaranteed to be real and it is 100 proof and tastes OH SO GOOD going down......  :)

sorry i know this is slightly off topic but i wanted to ramble it out.....

I was a bartender for over 6 years.  I married bottles only on occasion & only in 1 bar & only because it was a private club & only from a 1 gallon container to the bar liter of the same flavor (ie jack to jack).

the other 3 bars (barback/bouncer at 1) I worked at - I NEVER did it & it was not the company policy.

Mainly - it is a pride ethics thing but it's also illegal in CO.  You can make a premixed shot & put it in a labelless clean bottle but you can't legally fill bottles even w/the same alcohol (like I did at the other bar - it was a private club & outside that particular law).  The reason it is illegal is because of exactly what you describe.

That is a shame you can't even count how many times you did it.  I am curious that you willfully did it - why?  Especially a well into a call or top shelf?

When the money rolls single malt scotch is my fave. Usually though it's Old Thompson cuz it's (ugh) almost good and right cheap at $12.99. Tonight I picked up a bottle of Sterling Canadian Whiskey at $6.99 a bottle and it tastes just like a $6.99 bottle of whiskey.

I drink whiskey and I've had 50 types or so.  Last I bought was 3 bottles of the cheapest stuff (Canadian blend) from the NH L store and it was $8.50 per 1.5L if you buy 3 of them and do the rebate (which I did).  I've never paid the little before (not even on a military base) so I am quite happy about the price.  I mix it with water, ice and cola.

If you think that, then I recommend you stay away from Lagavulin or Laphroig.

My man!  Good, if pricey, taste (I'm generally on the 12 yr Macallan and 10-yr Talisker).

For about the same price as the McClelland's, you can get Bowmore Legend (which I've read is aged 8 yrs but is unmarked on the bottle), which I would recommend as a great lower-shelf Scotch.

Indeed. Laphroiag tastes like iodine infused with horehound rock candy!

I'm not much on the Islays, but I did give them a fair chance. I just greatly prefer the Speysides. I also tried a few midlands and lowlands, but they were mostly watery and uninteresting.

McClellands is Bowmore. Bowmore owns and produces the McClelland line of malts.

Jameson is my favorite whiskey, though I also enjoy Jack Daniel's, Crown Royal, and Canadian Club, amongst others.

Jameson is my son's middle name. He'll appreciate his dad's sense of humor someday.................someday. hahaha

Bowmore 17yo is my usual favorite. Once, a rare and delightful event, I had the 30yo . . . ummmmm, so sublime and downright sexy.

Porcupine_in_MA

Jack Daniels is my favorite, but I like any kind of whiskey.
