Damn do I hate Vonage, especially when the power goes out and you have no other way to make phone calls.

As of 2:42p (Eastern) on 1/1/09, I got "the number you have dialed is not in service" when I tried calling 603-780-4174 from my own Vonage line.

I've got Vonage, but it's been inoperable for at least two weeks now.   :P  I've taken every step listed on the Vonage support site for "no dial tone", multiple times.  I've searched the web for other things to try.  I've deactivated various startup programs, in case they're fighting with the router for registration or something.  I tried setting up a Fon wireless router, although that really wouldn't have fixed the problem anyway since it doesn't have a jack to connect with my phone, but I couldn't get it to work either.  I think I'm just cancelling Vonage tomorrow; they're actually raising my rates along with this complete lack of service.  Man do I hate fiddling with computers and wires and shit.  Just work, dammit!! >:(

Well, I havent had Vonage before, but keep written records if you cancel service.
Which leads me to my next question.  For the folks experiencing Vonage outages,
how do you receive internet access, i.e. Comcast or other cable provider, DSL,  etc?
The ISPs have threatened to cut access for file sharing via torrents and once disabled
my IRC client by blocking access.  Wonder if Vonage just really sucks or maybe something else
is happening.

I've had Vonage, with Comcast cable Internet, for three years and have been quite pleased with it until just the past month.  Unfortunately, Vonage's customer service apparently sucks if it fails to work as intended.  I've read so many horror stories on the Internet about it that I haven't even bothered calling them.  And by funny coincidence, they picked this month to tell me they're raising my rates.

Ya know, this all started when I was, most uncharacteristically, cleaning my apartment.  I shifted the serpentine morass of wires and cables under my desk while vacuuming, and knocked something out of kilter, and have never since been able to get Internet and phone to work simultaneously.  Which just goes to show, you should never waste time cleaning... way more trouble than it's worth.   :P   :nerd:

The people at Vonage will probably have you make sure all the cords are plugged
into the right places and do a power cycle sequence and if that doesnt solve it
tell you to hire a computer guy.

You'd have a better chance of finding someone who enjoys Ruckzuck than finding
people who are knowledgeable and take pride in their work anymore.  At least thats
what the voices tell me.  No wonder I live in a nest of 120vac, 12vdc, ethernet,
and coaxial cables that would make big birds nest look 1/2 scale.

Precisely.  That's why I haven't bothered to call; as if I haven't already done all of that, dozens of times at this point.

My VOIP guy is good........................................at least as far as I know ;D

I thought about getting it until I learned it was internet dependent and then said forget it.  I have my old corded phone and I wish I had one with the old dialer but I can't find any with answering machines attached.

Whenever the power went out everybody in my old neighborhood loved me because I was the only one with a working phone!  :)   They'd have to listen to my lectures about the downsides of some modern technology too because for years I got made fun of by them for not having a microwave.  >:D

I've got Skype, it's working well.
