Anyone here have any thoughts regarding how we as individuals can be ready to do better than the Louisianans if a huge disaster ever hits us?

My main thought:? Buy an ounce or two of Tincture of Iodine and learn how to treat water with it.? ?Water is usually the weak link in the chain after a massive disaster.

However I went to update my supply today and the drug stores did not have any!? They say they don't carry it any more!? So I may order over the net and resell to whoever wants it.

The other thing is building or updating our disaster kits.  Mine is in the trunk right now!  But it needs work.

Details on treating water can be found at

actually you have to d/l the document but here are the relevant details:

Man, I looked at this thread, I I was hoping you were going to tell me how to build my house, so that it would with-stand a type 4 huricane -- even if the levee broke.

I'm sure that if huricane defence was a free market thing, there would be methods of protection besides just stopping the water from coming over the coast-line.

In a truly free market, almost no one could build a home or business in a place like New Orleans.? They could not afford the cost of hurricane and flood insurance, so they could not get a mortgage.? Then, when disaster strikes, there would be very few people living there.

But this is far from a free market.? Artificial government guarantees on mortgages, coupled with vast insurance regulations, lead to foolish construction - like building a city in a hole in the ground and pumping the extra water out.? When disaster strikes, the government steals everyone's money to pay for it and prints all the "money" it couldn't steal.? Thus, it forcefully drains the resources of the rest of the country in order to rebuild a city in a hole in the ground, and the process repeats itself.

As you said in an earlier post, no government agency's stock will plummet, because the "investors" are actually being robbed and cannot sell their stock... which doesn't exist.? It's most likely that no person or agency be held responsible.? And even if an agency is held fully responsible for the disaster, their income will be significantly increased in order to prevent future mistakes. ::)

I have an idea... let's build a city in a hole in the ground!? ?:o

Jee, I can't imagine why such a city would flood!

I think it is a great idea to relocate the entire feral government to NoLa.  Move everything there.

Alternate site:  Top of Mt St. Helens....

If the Gov was relocated to NO, you can bet they would build a better dike ;D

Kat Kanning

If they want good dykes, they should move to San Francisco.

Lloyd Danforth

How good are the Dykes in SF and how do you know this?

What was the line in "Good Morning, Vietnam"??

"What's the definition of a protective dike?  It's a big woman in comfortable shoes saying, 'Don't go near that!'"
