I would imagine you will meet far more German tourists and German speakers.  Out here in the Yosemite area, we get quite a few German tourists, but the Chinese outnumber all others by about 3-1.

Okay, thanks!  :)   I hope I can learn both of them but I have to begin with only 1 of course.  The Chinese is so difficult because there are like 4 different tones but the same words and each tone has a different meaning.  Could you imagine making a "tone" mistake?  :o

What one do you think I should learn first?

Not to buy crap you don't need and will never use

O-K that response just has to go into the curmudgeon hall of fame.  ;D

I tried learning Mandarin a few months ago using Rosetta Stone with visions of freaking people out when ordering at the Chinese restaurant. It was great brain stimulation. I could feel new pathways being opened and my brain buzzing or vibrating. It was cool and I started to be able to understand the language, but the problem was speaking it. I just couldn't get my mouth, tongue, and/or vocal cords to do what's needed. So I switched to Spanish which I took 3 years of in high school 12 years ago, but since in was government school we spent the entire third year making pinatas and anything I had learned before I forgot.

So I don't know how hard German is, but I thought I'd tell you my experience with Chinese.

That's what I want to do at a Chinese restaurant too, that is so funny!  I want to know if they're talking about me first.   Ha, that's a shame that you could understand it but not speak it, now you can only know if chinese people are talking about you and you can't freak them out by answering.  Sorry, but that is hilarious! ;D

I already know some Spanish but I can't roll my tongue for the r's, damn tongue!   :P
