This article was on msn.com today. I'm quite surprised that the impending death of a major bureaucracy, which many hold up to be proof that government "works", is not treated as more major news. The author seems confident that the USPS is on its way out.

'bout damn time. Hello? Email! Online bill paying! Demand for door-to-door mail dropping as fast as the demand for horseshoes when cars were coming into the market. Sheesh.

I find it amusing that they actually have to explain how files are sent over the internet and why it means lower mail volume. Then I realized it was MSN, the same company that makes the computer shutdown process begin with "Click Start"...

I saw the article. In the comments about half said it was about time, and the other half where statist saying the post office should stay in business. Lots also claimed they don't get any federal tax money, which is complete hogwash, if any one has any articles about USPS and the federal budget, they always mention the post master asking for more money from congress every year.
I said that there is always going to be a need for paper mail service, but the USPS should be sold to UPS Fedex, and DHL and they should be allowed to deliver mail under a $1.  I also pointed out with these companies current volumes that the costs to deliver mail might actually come down.

I love how they use the wording "stay in business" for what is essentially a non-business(as it doesn't behave like a business).

USPS doesn't receive any tax dollars. Its a quasi-governmental agency (like many others). Its regulation by Congress means it must ask for changes in shipping/mail rates. The oversight is due to its monopoly on First Class mail. The USPS wouldn't actually be sold just disolved... but I believe it would take a constitutional amendment to Article One to do so.

You mean my "forever" stamps might not be, well, forever?

Lloyd Danforth

The way postal rates are climbing, Forever Stamps might be a good investment.

Well, only sort of. They don't receive tax dollars for their operating budget. However, they DO receive tax dollars for just about every other use they can come up with -- like meetings, trainings, travel, buying stuff, etc.
