The National Rainbow Gathering in New Mexico went well. They plan to hold it on the East Coast next year. The consensus was "New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky". Notice which states are listed first! I think the reason so many states were listed is that there are few qualifying sites in the states on the east coast. I think the goal was Vermont originally, but hopefully it will be in the Shire. Maybe you can pass the word around the Free Stater's, and perhaps they can help identify a location.

15,000 people camping out without getting a permit.

No money allowed.  They use a currency that grows as a weed.

I'm all for alternative currencies.  I'm also for people camping without permits.  Sounds like a good idea!

There's a lot of controversy surrounding them, talk of child molestation and so forth. Don't know how valid it is. We had someone move here for a little while who grew up with them. His parents were part of it since he was born. Forget his name at the moment.

What's a rainbow gathering?

They've experimented with social organization for their gatherings and have come up with this mini-manual (unofficial). I think there's some other thread here on it.

Check out their statement about gathering on public lands:

Our Permit to Gather reads as follows: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for redress of grievances."

IGNORE ALL RUMORS OF CANCELLATION!

their intent on staying on public grounds because they're allowed to under the constitution.

While I agree that anyone, or any group of any size, should be allowed to gather on "public" land, I disagree with the concept of "public land".

"The Family" objects to the notion of property in any form. They allow barter for items deemed to be "luxury" instead of "necessity", but any "necessities" are supposedly free for the taking. Even if they're groceries in a grocery store: if you need it, take it.

I know there is lot of inaccurate, government-driven press spin about the Rainbow Gathering, much of which obviously can't be trusted because of the source. On the other hand, I've read a lot of local reporting about the Gathering in Arkansas a few years ago, where local store owners had initially welcomed the group, but found themselves robbed blind by groups who would swarm their stores, pocket as much as they could, and flee in multiple directions without paying.

I imagine that assigning a single descriptor to the "Rainbow Family" would be as futile as defining "Free Staters". I'm sure there are good folks amongst them, but they carry a lot of bad baggage.

That's been my experience as well: They talk a loud pitch about how we should all share everything we have, and now, since you have more than they do, you're only too glad to give it to such generous souls as them, aren't you?
The definition of "necessity" is as amorphous as a bureaucracy's, too.

Would anyone be interested in recruiting at the Northeast Regional Rainbow Gathering near Mount Moosilauke this week and weekend?
