Oil wells do many things, but they rarely melt down. This isn't even a big spill... Ixtoc in 1979 was far larger, went on for nine months unchecked, and no one evens remembers that it happened. (But then, since no American politician could extort money out of the Ixtoc spill, it wasn't important...)
