Driving through Indiana at 1:30am, I spotted a police car in the highway median.  As I was driving behind a slow truck in a construction zone, I didn't slow down.  The police car pulled out after me, and I thought, "Oh no, this can't be anything good,"  The police car pulled up behind me, in the next lane over and drove there on my corner, which made me extremely nervous.  What if I had to change lanes fast for some emergency, like an animal jumping out in the road?  I didn't like him in my blind spot, so I slowed down.  He matched any speed changes I made.  Maybe he was reading the bumper stickers on my car.  I saw a rest area coming up, and since I needed to use the facilities, I pulled off.  He pulled off after me and turned on his lights.  Yay.

Policeman:  How you doing tonight?
Me:  I was fine until you started hassling me.
Policeman:  How come you're so testy?
Me:  I don't like that gun thing you're doing.
Policeman (bewildered about me bringing up the "gun in the room":  What?  I haven't touched my gun.
Me:  Anytime you do anything, it's by threat of force.  If I didn't pull over when you turned your lights on, you'd feel OK about shooting me.
Policeman:  You know why I pulled you over?
Me:  Because you're a thug?
Policeman:  Your tire went over the fog line.
Me:  (rolling eyes)
Policeman:  It's a cite-able offense.
Me:  (more eye rolling)
Policeman:  License and registration.
(I fumble around to get my papers.)
Russell:  What do you need those for?
Policeman:  Do you have some ID?  (to Russell)
Russell:  No.
Me:  You don't need to see his identification.
Policeman:  You don't have a wallet on you?
Russell:  No.
Policeman:  So you're refusing to identify yourself?
Me:  Did you try asking him his name?
Policeman:  So you don't have a wallet?
Russell:  No.
Policeman:  (starts to walk off with my papers)
Me:  I have to go to the bathroom.   That's why I came in here.
Policeman:  It'll just be a minute.  (walks off)
(I get out of the car and head to the bathroom)
Policeman:  GET BACK IN THE CAR!
Me:  What will you do if I don't?  Shoot me?
Policeman:  GET BACK IN THE CAR!
Me:   What will happen if I don't?
Policeman:  GET BACK IN THE CAR!
(I get back in the car.)
(After a minute the policeman comes back, hands me my papers.)
Policeman:  (sarcastically)  It was sure nice talking to you pleasant folks.

So no ticket, no comment on us not wearing seatbelts, never forced Russell to show ID, and he apparently had an unpleasant time talking to us.    I felt so bad for him, after being forced to have the conversation with him.

You meanie. Forcing him to pull you over like that, just so you could be unpleasant to him.

As long as he made it home safely at the end of his shift. That's all that matters, right?

Er, FSP 1, Indiana Trooper 0...

A generous aggregate, FSP 0-IN Trooper 0 :)
