Police evacuated residents from a quiet South Nashua neighborhood Wednesday night as they surrounded one house during an apparent standoff, one neighbor said.

Eric J. White, who lives directly across the street, said Nashua police initially came to his door about 5:30 p.m. and told him and his wife to go to their cellar as a "safety precaution."

Police returned about an hour later.

"They came back yelling, 'You can go back to the far end of your yard, jump the fence and get out'," said White, who followed their instructions.

White, who lives at 21 East Dunstable St., said the standoff still was under way four hours later. He was speaking via cell phone, about four blocks from the standoff.

White said police had barricaded the neighborhood and surrounded a brown house at the corner of Dane and East Dunstable streets. He said it appeared as if a SWAT team were on scene.

White, who owns a plumbing and heating company, said officers were using his work truck to take cover.

"He (the occupant) is not answering them. We hear the (police) calling him over the bullhorn," White said.

Nashua police were not immediately available for comment.

White said the man who lives in the house is "actually a super nice guy." He lives alone.
