While the family were bringing in groceries Saturday afternoon, someone left the door slightly ajar. Tonka, the 125 pound Great Dane/Bloodhound mix who loves to go walkabout, took advantage and was gone like a shot.

Even though the traditional thing would be to let the local police know so they could be on the lookout, we do our best to avoid contact.

Sarah let her network of new friends know, and she got a call today about a possible sighting. It wasn't Tonka, but as they were about to head home they were pulled over by the local PD for a burned out taillight. Just a warning, no big deal, but they told the cop why they were out looking around. He said, "Oh yeah, I picked her up last night. She's fine. She's down at the Whitefield Animal Hospital."

Excellent. That's the closest vet. Mary will hop down there in the morning and bail her out.

Then he took a look in the car and told Sarah, "I know you."

Her reply: "Well, that's not creepy or anything, because I don't know you!"

He said, "Sure, we've met, you just don't remember it." At this point her mind is racing, because the only time she's been out where there were strangers, it was a party where things were available that aren't approved by the state.

Nope, nothing that dramatic... turns out that when the family stopped by the local pawn shop and bought a used piece of furniture,  the cop was working there and helped deliver it.

It's nice to know that our part-time small-town cops are locals who write warnings, instead of big-town wannabees who bust chops.
