No action of the government can ever be a 'private event.'   Some people on this list seem to hate hapless liberals even more than they hate the government.  Amazing.

I agree!

Good thing I speak with my mouth, not with my threads.

It's a little cold to be wearing a tshirt right now anyway, so I'll have to keep the seditious message to speech and writing only.

It has nothing to do with hating liberals (my wife is a far left liberal).

It has to do with the purpose of the event.  The state of the nation is when the president has a chance to comunicate what's going on in the US government to the people.  It's not a soap box for some woman in the mits of a nervous break down to grandstand and drum up support from other Bush bashers on her quest for public office.

She's had her chance to protest, I'm sure by know everyone knows about her and her cause so why does she need to distract from an event where people what to hear what someone OTHER then Cindy has to say?

You want to protest, great set up your own event.  Don't distract from other events though.

You just know that if our involvement in Iraq ended toomorrow and all of our people were home by the weekend ( a good thing), Sheehan's handlers would make her the figurehead for giving our rights, such as they are, over to the UN and every other stupid fucking idea out there!

Lloyd is right. Plus none of you have considered what the press did NOT tell you. There's the rub.
And you mean to tell me if I don't follow the rules of your house while I'm in it, you are not going to toss me out? C'mon...this was an invitation only thing, so it was subject to certain rules.

The war may be wrong, and they may have even been unfair to ban someone with a t-shirt they did not like, but that is an isolated issue and taken out of context. The larger issue is, Cindy and the people behind her are not people I want to empower (The UN, Jesse Jackson, etc.) so the t-shirt issue kinda doesn't matter here.

She also unfurled a banner.  I believe that is what got her kicked out.

Keith  nice teeshirt especially after the shooting yesterday.

I think Bush should be impeached but I don't want Cindy leading the charge... it will detract from the real reasons that Bush should be impreached.

Really?  Hmmm... and the truth slowly comes out!

Funny, the OTHER person who was kicked out isn't getting as much attention...

Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young (news, bio, voting record) of Florida ? chairman of the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee ? was removed from the gallery because she was wearing a T-shirt that read, "Support the Troops ? Defending Our Freedom."

Any commnets about that case????

At the risk of derailing this thread, how does that work. Do you just not talk politics?

So, free speech only for the people who agree with you?  Come on.  It was a government function.  It is subject to the people.  Not the other way around. Whatever we think of her, Cindy Sheehan is one of the people.

You seem to think that the president has the right to propagandize unimpeded by opponents.  But he has no such right.  He has no more rights than anyone, he simply has more duties.  One of those is to respect the constitution.  This is a cardinal failure to do so.

Not at all... I fully support people protesting the president.

But there's a time and place for everything.

Notice the REPUBLICAN wife was also tossed out for a PRO troops t-shirt?  She was just as wrong as Cindy.  So it's not about being against the president or even what she was protesting for or against... its about the time and the place of the protest.

Aha! Things are different when you have all the facts. So, are we as upset about that person? You would have to say yes if you are being fair and honest about it.
Was there a sign that was posted that said no slogans on tshirts allowed?

I love how we are arguing about an anecdote that happened during an event that should not happen, in a place that should not exist full of people who should not have the power and authority they have!
I have not watched a state of the union address in 40 years and I'll never feel bad about missing any of them except in the unlikely event that the entire building is leveled during the speech.
