Somebody w/ more time/business savy/ and/or money on their hands should open up a libertarian bookstore.

We could have a section on gun rights.

Dial 911 and die
7 myths of Gun Control
both of John Lott's books,
etc.

Also books about how to use guns and gun safty, etc. so gun users can come in for practical stuff too. I wouldn't know anything about those types though as I don't have a gun, and don't know much about them.

We could have a section on history from libertarian perspective.

Day of Deciet, Illusion of Victory, The New Dealer's war, FDR's Folly, etc.

Subsection about Lincoln The Real Lincoln Emancipating slaves enslaving free men Taxes, Tarrifs, and Blockades etc. There are some good southern writers on the subject too, but I know less about them.

A Subjection w/ books about the depade over the Constitution? Both modern historical libertairan inquiries and Anti-federalist and Federalist papers. etc. Perhaps this goes w/ the constitutional theories section.

We could have a section on libertarian economics. Austrian/chicago,David D Friedman.

Murry Rothbard, a lot of Hyack (PEople actually know him he's kind of popular.) Mises, Milton Friendman (as much as I can't stand the guy and in general disagree w/ the chicago school-- he and they are very libertarian compaired to the current fair.) David D Friedman's The Machinery of Freedom, etc.

Section on philosophical anarchism/individualist anarchism/anarcho-capitalism.
(As much as I think anarcho-socialist and anarcho-communists are kooks, at least they're anti-state, and next to anarcho-capitalist/market anarchist writings it would generate debate once people started thinking about it. Perhaps we should have one section to anarchism in general so you get a variety of though -- from Tolkien to Tolstoy in that section, and then a seperate section for explicit capitalist anarchy. Christian Anarchy needs to be in here somewhere too. Perhaps that goes in religion though.

We could have a section on current afairs. (Have to have Bovard)

Section on constitutionalism. And probably w/ that authors who opposed it and supported the articles, etc.  both pro- and con but both sides from a limited government/libertarian perspective. In other words books opposing the Constitution but with the idea that because it was a huge power grab, and books supporting the constitution because compaired to what we have now if it was honored it would be very limited.

Section on the seperation of school and state. (both complete seperation along side other choice. Gatto, etc. as much as I hate vouchers, should have books representing both schools of though. Education Free and Compulsory. Free to Choose (:P but you know, differing oppinions and divirsity of ideas) etc.

A section on the evils of the federal reserve. Whatever Happened to Penny Candy  books about the evils of the 2nd and the 1st national bank. etc.

A section on the evils of the U.N. Freedom at the alter etc.

As section on Christian libertarianism, and perhaps another section for broader libertarian/religious/philosophical thought. (Roderick's done some excellent work on Confuscious.) Some of the Tolstoy would go in here, along w/ Lew Rockwell's LAurance Vance's Christianity and War, etc.  I'm sure there's others though.  HEaling our World would be good here.

A section devoted to the evil's of war. Running the gambit from pacifism to just war theory, and constitutional war theories, etc.  To THe Myth of National Defence and other works which discredit the whole concept of government protection.

Perhaps we should have alternative health stuff, and books criticizing the modern state/medicine socialism/fascism. AMA Cartels, etc. and supporting free market heal-care. I'm sure their are some books about this.

Also some books about environmentalism From Free Market Environmentalism and The Skeptical Environmentalist to Michale Chriton's most recent work and books published by PERK. There's some good conservative literature on the subject too.

Of course you have to have objectivism and Rand, but I'd prefer to have mostly anti-war objectivist books. And also objectivists books that lean more towards anarchy a la The Market for Liberty But for sake of diversity and debate we should probably have some more mainstream OBJECTIVISM. And Rand's books are good for the most part.

Speaking of which we need libertarian fiction. Both sci-fi and fantasy. "The Golden Age" trilogy (And in fact all of John C. Write's books are very explicitly libertarian albiet his Everness books are a bit too pro democracy for my taistes. He got Promithius awards two different years for having the best quality most libertarian book published. (And he writes hard sci-fi/fantasy.) I hear Neil Smith has a lot of good fiction books. I'm sure their are other mainstream writers out-there that are very libertarian also. I think that there are explicitly libertarian westerns out there too, but I wouldn't know about them.

No libertarian bookstore would be complete w/o anti-tax books. Perhaps books documenting tax rebellians, but also current anti-tax books. (We probably need to include "THE FAIR TAX" But just have a couple and put them next to much more radical libertarian books about how taxes are stealing. Etc. There are numerous good quality conservative and libertarian books on the subject.

A magazine section. THe New American. Pat Buchanan's magazine. The various Austrian journals put out by the mises institute.  Reason. Liberty. etc Backwoods homes (Or Back home. I don't remember which one it is.) etc. Magazines that run the whole gambit on liberty from paleo-con to survivalist to libertarian to underground, etc. Possibly even include Fortune in this and "The Economist for some libertarian-lite mainstream mags. Gun magazines. Hackers. Tech mags that are for "CyberAnarchy." etc.

Etc. There's a whole library of good quality libertarian books that never see the light of day. But somebody actively seeking them could fill and entire bookstore (although probably a small one.) w/ these sorts of books. A good place to start looking is here, at the Lew Rockwell bibliographies.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/biblios.html

Many times in malls, niche book-stores like this can do very well. Even right next door to Walden books or B and N. And people wondering through the mall would browse and it'd be an outreach.

I'm an intellectual.  And like it or not, many of the people we'll need to convice are of such a thinker personality. This could be one way to get ideas of liberty in public debate and at the same time turn a little profit.  Speaking w/ individuals and changing hearts and minds one at a time is my idea of activism. Nothing wrong w/ big protests, and nothing wrong w/ lobbying government w/in the system for more freedom, and I support it but it's just not my style. (And of course we'd distribute Keen Free Press  ;) )

Who knows?  Perhaps if nobody's picked this up and run w/ it, I'll need to experiment and try my hand at something like this when I get there.  (Maybe I'll open it up right next to my comic book shop.  8)) But seriously It'd be cool if somebody ran w/ this before I got their. Perhaps you'd hire me as an employee. :)

Just an idea.

I honestly believe we should look for ideas that both spread libertarian ideals AND are profitable. That's why libertarians will win in the long run. We aren't two faced about turning a profit and indeed believe it's a moral good unlike the socialist "capitalist anti-capitalists." that make lots of money attacking capitalism.

Sorry, I posted this in the wrong forum. Could somebody move it to "Underground projects"

Thanks,

Tracy

P.S.

BTW, If it were me like also have a collection of libertarian comics. I'd order bulk back-issues of the Anarchy miniseries and the ongoing that only lasted 8 issues  :'( . Allan Moore Graphic novels (V for Vendeta/Watchmen/etc.) Limited series and trades by Paul Pope (The Current BatMan Year 100 is AMAZING. Batman takes on police state USA in 2036 and the Gothum PD. I'm sure it'll be collected in a trade just like his other stuff has been.) Perhaps it their are trades featureing objectivist charactors like Mr A and Clue, etc, scroung them up too.) etc. TS

One of my life goals floating around in my brain is to open a bookstore, up near Colebrook, which doesn't have one. I'd also like to open a gun shop, but there is already one there, at least.

There is an online libertarian bookstore, that sells mostly political books though.

Did I piss someone off by posting the link? I'm asking because I think my karma took a hit.

I didn't mean any disrespect. There's just some good discussion in that thread I think is applicable to this one.

tracysaboe

Not that I know of.  I had forgotten that thread.

I apreciate you bringing it up again.

I was just curious because that was my first post since last Friday.

I guess it's someone trolling the board.

The more you post, the more hits you take.

My solution is to applaud everyone who's posting (unless it's really, really bad).

That's a good policy, and I shall begin with you.
