As a point of curiosity, and to budget for future trips, I kept careful track of our gas mileage on this trip. I had estimated 4,000 miles at 10mpg, and over-budgeted for an average of $3 per gallon.

The numbers have now been crunched:
4,077 miles driven
413 gallons of gasoline used
$1,137 spent on gasoline
$2.752 average price per gallon
$2.629 lowest price per gallon (Bowling Green, KY)
$2.999 highest price per gallon (Holyoke, MA)

This includes our time spent running around in-state. (That particular tankful got over 17mpg.)

2000 GMC Savanah 1/2 ton, Trailmaster conversion van, 5.7L Vortec
Pulling a 24' travel trailer, 4,800 pounds empty (roughly 6,500 pounds loaded)

That is depressing.

They probably could have gotten an ass for half that, it would have taken longer to get here but the novelty would be worth it.

Flying would definitely be cheaper. But flying, renting a car, renting a room, and paying for meals, would be more expensive than driving and pulling our "room", which happens to have a kitchen, refrigerator, and storage space for a week's worth of meals.

I'm no economist </gump>, but I do understand TROI.

Rumor has it that you can get a lot of ass for that kind of money. ;)

It was nice to meet you and Mrs. Lex, and Baby Lex too.  :)

More incentive to move to NH:

You get better gas mileage here.

I think that would make for a great state motto: The State of Higher MPGs  ;D It's definitely a better sell than just saying: The Granite State

So, according to this site http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/1054.html (which has a great US map of state gas taxes) the average Local, State, and Federal gas taxes combine to 45.9 cents per gallon.

413 gallons * 0.459 = $189.567 spent in excise taxes, average if you hit many states.
($189.567 / $1135 ) * 100 = 16.67% of your cash went to various general funds.

Not surprisingly, NH's gas excise tax is amongst the lowest in the country.

We will be visiting Texas sometime this year .... and we will drive.

OK, here are the numbers:

380 miles ( to and from Lancaster including 2 trips to Sugar Hill)

$2.799 per gallon
49 mpg

Total gas cost $21.71

Just another twist of the knife for Mary (couldn't resist)

Well total miles of my NH trip was 1252, but I don't know what anything cost.

I do know I am broke for a while.  ;D
