Any Dieselheads/BioDiesel nutz out there in FSP-land?

The bike and the cage get pretty similar fuel economy:

'98 Honda VFR800 Vs. '84 Toyota Camry Turbo-D

I didn't get my first cage until I was nearly 23 years old.  A bike was my primary vehicle from age 15 until then -even in Wisconsin's snowy winters back when it actually used to snow in Wisconsin and stay on the ground all winter.  I like having a heater.  I'm a pussy.  I still ride year-round but there is nothing like driving on ice-covered roads on a 2-wheeled vehicle and having some cell-phone impared driver tail-gating you at 12" behind your rear wheel.

They really don't have a lot of time to slow down much when you become a speed bump -not that they seem to care...

I'm not going without a cage again.  Sometimes I want a cage ;)

Many of my friends and I rode through each winter in New Haven, CT - today we could do it in Lebanon, NH (if we were still idiots).

I think you will enjoy NH a lot.  The roads here are great.

I learned my lesson crossing a bridge in upstate NY almost 10 years ago.  No more riding in the snow for me.  Hence my interest in cages when I move to NH.

My bike is an old school BMW R75/90.  I can't wait to move up to NH.

Anywho, seeing Pat's veggie wagon at a PorcFest and being introduced to WVO by him was really interesting and inspired me to look into this despite my love of my bike and how it gets better fuel economy than any car but a Honda Insight.  If I have to resort to a cage when I move to NH I'll be thinking about all the above.  Still, I think my choice will be to live close enough to work that I don't have to drive daily.

Well, Seamas, glad I could be an inspiration to someone. ;D

I'm a volunteer member of UNH's biodiesel group.  I help with assembly and repairs of the biodiesel processor and the methanol recovery system.  We make changes to the processor fairly frequently to improve production.  KOH can be bought much cheaper in bulk from leather tanning supply companys.  Methanol is usually $2 to $3 per gallon if you buy it in 55 gallon drums.  If you want to use ethanol, you should remove any remaining water with a molecular seive.  If someone wants a tour of the lab, I'm sure I could work something out.

Will you help me build an AK from a receiver flat after the tour?

Would you be supplying the parts, or do you want to buy them from me?

You do know that this a "watched forum" by the feddies and the staties right?

This is still in legal territory but you are skating pretty close to the edge.  And the way the batmen are "interpreting" their own unconstitutional "directives" these days we don't want to incriminate ourselves on a "public" forum.

Me, I don't even HAVE any guns at all.  Nope, none -not me.  They are dangerous I hear!

I have most of the parts...

You are probably an inspiration to more folks than you know - even my girlfriend said, "he's a gearhead, like you".  What did you think of my ideas on folks' motivations for going WVO?  Given that I'll probably have to have a cage part time; I'm really conflicted.  I'm leaning towards an old gas pick-em-up that I can work on myself but maybe a diesel pickup conversion  is an option.  I know that the latter won't save me money but not giving money to bad governments is important to me.  How available is WVO in NH?

I have most of the parts...
What parts do you need?  I have more flats, rails, and rivets than I need for my projects, and I can talk you through the process and let you use my tools.  I also have some extra sec. 922 compliance parts if you're willing to pay retail.  IM me if you are serious about building your own.

What process are you using for bending the flats?  Do you use a jig or are you doing the score/bend/weld process?

I've read a lot about making an AK but since I'm not much of a welder and have no equipment I don't want to go that route.  I'm not worried about heat-treating -that's simple with a MAPP torch (necessary for FAL building before that damn unconstitutional AWB sunsat) but the welding thing kind of threw me. I've seen a few aborted receiver bendings and figure that is nearly impossible without a high-quality bending brake or a cast jig to swag it over.

I have a good jig that makes it pretty easy to fold your own, and it makes them look good too, with perfectly straight right angles.  Mine also folds the top rails.  I have a customized spot welder for welding in the lower rails.  I have special rivet jigs for riveting the trigger guard and trunions on.

OH!

You should organize a group build someday!  Sounds like you are set up to do it right.

I'd be in.
