Anyone know what's in store for cigarrattes nationally and in new england over the next year or two?  Any new cig tax hikes in new hampshire, or surrounding states, or nationally?  Or other factors coming down the pike that might raise cigarrette prices?

Texas raised cigarette taxes by 343%, or $1.00 a pack, effective January 1.

I heard this on Free Talk Live. :)

Yup. Yet another reason Texas sucks (and I don't smoke!)

Since we live near the Arkansas border, all of our local "tobacco shack" type stores already went out of business in anticipation of the price hike. (If you don't have those where you live... they are typically small portable buildings set up in a parking lot, with a drive-through window. They sell tobacco products, and sometimes lottery tickets or soft drinks. Just a cheap little specialized store.)

Cigarettes on the Arkansas side of town will go up by $0.51 per pack, too... they were operating under a border city tax exemption since Texas had lower taxes. Now that Texas raised their tax, Arkansas will too.

Texarkana, Arkansas is about to raise their sales tax also, to 11%!  :o

There's talk of raising the cigarette tax in NH. It's one of those things where if it's proposed, it's impossible for it to not pass. Sweden is raising it's tobacco taxes. The taxes are different depending on what kind of tobacco it is. A 20-pack is going to cost 29 cents more starting January first... This is coming from the government who won the election on a tax-lowering platform ::)

This used to shock me when I would hear about the hypocracy of politicians, it doesn't anymore.   :(

I was listening to WKBK the other day and some stupid bureaucrat was talking about giving the state of NH a monopoly on cigarettes. The proposal would restrict the sale of cigarettes to state liquor stores. It doesn't sound like it will happen, but it drove me crazy listening to this person talk about how great it would be.

Correction: Arkansas's statewide tax is $0.59; they were allowed to charge the lower Texas rate of $0.41 to stay competitive. Now that Texas has gone to $1.41, the Arkansas-side stores will have to charge the full $0.59, an increase of $0.18 per pack.

Looks like the other states are trying to catch up to Mich and NJ. I'll be getting an immediate tax break when I move on over. ;D

It's ceased to shock me, but it still pisses me off >:(
