Inexpensive hotel/motel (or couch!) in Keene?

The week after the NH Liberty Forum I plan to be in Keene on Monday and Tuesday looking for an apartment. Maybe as late as Wednesday depending on how it goes. My question is, where can I stay in Keene which isn't absolutely horrible and isn't going to break my (rather small) bank?

Caleb

I know this sounds weird, error, but you're better off not staying in Keene.  The cheaper motels are in Brattleboro, Vermont, which is about a fifteen minute drive away from Keene.  So when you visit New Hampshire, stay in Vermont.  :D

Hm. Since I'm not driving, that may not be a viable option...

I will initially be staying in Manchester.  But hope to move to Keene soon thereafter.
If you are open to it, error, or anyone else, I would like to room up in a two bedroom apartment with someone else.  Share the costs in some fair way.
I have no pets, don't smoke, and am quiet.
Just something to keep in mind.

All right, my travel plans are finalized. I'll be in Keene on the 26th, right after the Liberty Forum, and leaving the 28th. (Still have to find a place to move in to!) I'll have time to drop by Panera Bread, I'm sure.

But I'm still highly annoyed at the outrageous hotel prices. $100 a night for a roach-infested dump that won't hold heat? This is the sort of thing I'm finding. Where's the government program responsible for this?

Anyway. Does anyone have a couch I can crash on for a couple of days?

cheapest chain motel in new england is probably the motel 6 in brattleboro vt,  at about 35 bucks a night

error

Oh yes, they're MUCH, MUCH cheaper in Brattleboro. But I'm not bringing a car, as I said just above, so that's probably not going to be an option. (I'm not moving to Brattleboro! At least, I hope not.)

you can probably crash at our house

Thanks. That's probably all I'll do, since I expect mostly to be out looking at apartments, etc.

By the way, why exactly ARE the hotels so outrageously expensive?

Because there are not a lot of them....: )

Odd. There aren't all that many of them in Brattleboro either, but they're less than half the price. Maybe Keene needs another hotel...too bad it's not my line of work.

Good luck, error!  Will you have a source of income when you get there, or will you be looking for that too?

I could probably get to NH in a month but the whole "money" thing is keeping me back right now.  I'm planning on spending a few days there this summer handing out resumes before making the move.  Have you checked out the PORC house in Manchester?  Seems like there's always 1 or 2 bedrooms available...

Could be because of New Hampshire's 7(?)% rooms and meals tax, the rooms part essentially being a sales tax on the rental of hotel rooms. I don't think Vermont has an equivalent of that. That would only explain 7% of the price difference, though.
