Yup. The little Alaskan burgh of Anderson in the vicinity of Fairbanks is giving away twentysomething 1.3 acre house lots on Monday to the first applicants come a calling. Better hurry!

Stipulations: $500 down, and you must build a domicile upon your lot within two years.

Links by google! :)

I'd find it enlightening to know what those lots (used to) sell for in FRNs. Methinks it to be a clever gimmick, especially in that this apparently made national mainstream news.

A school social studies class suggested it to the city council.

Without knowing something about the land in question, I wouldn't know if that's a "giveaway" or not.  There's a lot of land in this country that's not worth $500 for an acre or two.  Where I used to live in SW rural Michigan, we used to marvel at how much people from Chicago would pay for a few acres of scrub woodland or blow sand if some promoter subdivided it into "rural home-sites."  (Tax assessed value of land like this was $25 - $125 an acre.)

The available land went quickly. We'll see if the new owners are happy in a couple of years.

Lots all claimed in a virtual stampede. I wonder if the Boise lawyer who got a parcel adjoining one claimed by a friend, for their "summer homes," was quite the intent of the town's plan! (see linked story)
