It needs to still be fairly bright, and I'd like to have the option of returning it if I learn upon hooking it up that it doesn't match my needs.

I'm assuming that pretty much all PC monitors are compatible with my computer but maybe I shouldn't assume that...   Should I?

Sounds like a safe assumption.  You can download drivers for pretty much any monitor.

The vast majority of monitors do not need special drivers, if they need any at all.

If you had very specific needs, then you probably wouldn't be asking here... ;)

In any case, you missed my spare monitor by a few months.  :)

I have an NEC 17" CRT MultiSync XP17 I could part with.  No givebacks!

If you still need a monitor, I think the UNH computer clusters may still have a few older monitors they are giving away.  Last time I checked, there was even a large (20+") monitor that was available for the taking, but being a CRT, it is heavy.  The university has replaced most of the cluster computer monitors with thin flat screen monitors.

I've got a fairly hot running 17" Micron monitor I don't need anymore, and a very poorly colored 19" one that I still use occasionally for my server.

If you can get a better one go for it, the micron was in my grandfathers shop for a long time, stained yellow and still smells like cigars. Works okay as a server monitor though that I only turn on once a month
