Justice Dept. sues tax-protesting charity
Group says it is educating citizen about right not to have taxes withheld

By Elizabeth Schwinn
Special to MSNBC.com

Just in time for tax season, the U.S. Justice Department is suing the founder of a charitable organization for allegedly peddling a national tax-fraud scheme that it says has cost the government $21 million.

(Rest of article (with links) can be read here.)

It has cost the government $21 million?  That's it?

Government officials blow more than that without batting an eye.

I'm sure it was essentially "written" by the IRS.

Lazy and complacent "journalists" just regurgitate gooberment press releases.

I wonder if the judge will allow the 'law' in his courtroom this time? Anyway, I wonder if this will break up the WTP movement? Time for secession...

You know, I used to think this was hyperbole. And then I actually saw it happening. (Here's an example: Lazy journalist's story vs. government press release)

In this case, though, it looks like the journalist actually made some small attempt to cover both sides of the story.

I stand by my previous statements in regard to the IRS.

Not only will the government refuse to hear a petition for a redress of grievance set forth in the 1st Amendment, but now they will sue you if you try.

I used to edit Video New Releases... "news stories" that gooberments, industry, and other groups would send out to TV station news departments. We would give them a pre-edited version and the footage to make their own story. Most of the time the stations would at most have their news person redo the voice over usually verbatim to our "news story". They were just plain lazy.

Often they would run "news stories" about new products that were really just free advertisements for the companies.

"Cost the government 21 million dollars"? Cost means price, as in, what you pay. Not receiving money isn't a "cost". By just phrasing things a certain way, the news article makes it seem like the money belongs to the government and the people are somehow stealing from the government. As if refusing to let someone rob you is the same thing as stealing from the robber.

The folks at "We the People" thought they could sue the gooberment into giving us our freedom back. The gooberment turns around and sues them... the difference being the gooberment has unlimited resources and will just use up all the "We the People's" resources.

Ed Brown started his trouble by suing the gooberment... I think the time for expecting the "Cult of the Lawyers" to give us justice is over.

Oh yes, VNRs. I love those things. Send copies to me and I'll publish 'em, with attribution! ;)

I agree Tom.  The gov'ts view is that you owe taxes.  You only get out of them if you get permission from the congress, and if you file the paperwork properly.
Earlier I read a report written about 'closing the tax gap'.  The entire report barely mentioned cash and tax evasion.  the report was a how to on dealing with the various identified problems.  My opinion is they have no effective solution to stop the cash tax evasion, so they didn't even mention the 'problem'!  I dealt a lot with tax avoidance, 'abusive tax schemes', underreporting, ect.
This confirms my belief that the less gov't paperwork you fill out, the harder it is for them to steal from you.  I have heard of all kind of ways to 'legally' reduce or eliminate the taxes charged to you.  I have always been suspicions of the schemes.  I believed that it is the irs's view that you owe taxes, and when filing any form or paper, they will treat it as fraudulent.  And you have simply made the gov'ts case for them.  Moral of the story-
pay cash and be paid in cash.   ;D
