While their beliefs reflect a voluntary effort...

What happens when someone enters their "fold/flock/gathering" who doesn't think it should be voluntary!?!

I'd have to say something smells bad here and I would have to wonder who really started this "movement"?

It's definitely a "number two" as far as "movements" go...lol.

Well......there are only a couple of Shakers left

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakers

Interesting group...

Terrible that the "government" ended their adoptions...

The more I learn each day...
The happier I am to be an anarchist!

I was under the impression that the reasons the Shaker movement is dying out is because no one is attracted to their lifestyle/ideology. What's the gov't done to suppress folks who would want to join the Shakers?

OBVIOUSLY!?! You didn't read the link in it's entirety!

The "government" "regulation" of adoption prevented the Shakers from continuing their practice of adoptions(more jack-booted thuggery)...

quote from wiki...

"Although there were six thousand believers at the peak of the Shaker movement, there were only twelve Shakers left by 1920. In the United States there is one remaining active Shaker community, at Sabbathday Lake, Maine. The Sabbathday Lake community still accepts new recruits, as it has since its founding. Shakers are no longer allowed to adopt orphan children after new laws were passed in 1960 denying control of adoption to religious groups, but adults who wish to embrace Shaker life are welcome."

end quote...

Honestly, in my opinion this is nothing less than genocide!

Oops. I misread the definition of "adoption" as "people looking to adopt Shaker philosphy as their own".

However, "that link" you posted appears quite voluminous. It'll likely take a day or two's worth of boredom to finish. ;) Much akin to some of my links to an obviously unpopular analysis of a fairly volatile subject matter. >:)

You guys found it alarming?  I thought it was pretty funny...

Again...

Are they going to "police" their own?
Or would they tacitly approve since it furthers their goal?

Don't drink the cool-aid!

Maybe that strict celibacy thing didn't work out so well in the long run...

Regarding "Voluntary Human Extinction," I think they're ready and willing to use coercive measures to ensure their group's success.  "Voluntary" is a throwaway word... what they really want to do is to make it illegal to breed.

Oh, uh, and I think this group is sickening.  :puke:

You guys must have been really grossed out when you read Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal.

richard,

Are you suggesting that that entire site is satirical?

I know people that actually think it's a good idea.

[Edit] - I suppose that this site could easily be satirical... especially given the logical doublespeak the author makes repeated use of...

hah.

In his time, Swift's readers thought the main issue being addressed in his Modest Proposal was cannibalism, not poverty. Like any good satirical work, this website a well done mix of real social criticism and humor.

Cool.  They can counterbalance the pressure put on Catholic families to birth as many Catholic babies as possible.  ::)   See, isn't hyperbole fun?
