Actually, if you have a decent NNTP subscription like newscene or something, there are groups that have posts of lots of ebooks like that. Books on everything from welding to stitching wounds to generating power. You could technically amass, er.. gigabytes worth of this stuff for later use. 
With the coming economic crisis and suspicions of false-flag operations in the works anything you can do to be self-sufficient should the need arise, is a good idea.

     The Collapse has come and the American people have finally
awakened from the American Dream to a nightmare reality.  A little
over a month has passed since the announcement of the bankruptcy of
Social Security and all its backup systems.
     Millions being unloaded from the Social Security system to the
already reeling welfare systems have caused a halt in most social
programs.  The cities are racked with violence, looting and
wholesale slaughter.  City police forces are quickly decimated.  As
fast as suburban police units are called in, they disappear, either
deserting or dying in the street fighting.

Let's update this for 2008:

     The Collapse has come and the American people have finally

to the American voters.

     Millions have opted out of the Federal Reserve Note in favor of
a metal backed currency. The cities are racked with violence, looting and

fast as suburban police units are called in, they disappear, either
deserting or dying in the street fighting.
