I think they are saying my tax return said the tax was 19K, and the money paid in was 16k, so they want the 3k balance + interest. I'm not even sure what happened. Maybe I should pay the 3k but not the interest. They have an incentive to wait 2 years to collect more money in interest.
you don't even know if you owe it yet

In short, I say: Pay the IRS all their damn money, and get your ass to NH ASAP. Then start picking your battles.
so if you just keep picking certain battles .... does that mean you might remain a slave?

TurboTax has a guarantee on their product. If it messed up, its there fault.

And you paid 16k in taxes? Get some deductions man!  :P
what if he made one million $s .... he might be a tax genius.

I'm not 100% sure about how this would work with the IRS, but if you eventually decide that you do owe them the money and you're going to pay them, you can always pay in installments...like, say $25 a month.  With civil courts, if you're showing an intent to pay, they really can't do anything.  Sure, it would take 10 years to pay them the $3K (plus years for the $20K interest), but it might work...

Well, being one who still, albeit wrongly, plays the Fed income tax game, I've found that they'll accept whatever ludicrously small monthly sum you offer them. They'll take $30/month automatically from your account forever, if you're comfortable having them plugged into your account (which they already are if you supplied an SS to your bank in the first place).

While my problem was in the hundreds rather than the thousands, I also got a dunning notice from the IRS in 2007 for errors in 2005.  And the main error was that my 1040, also calculated with TurboTax, showed more in taxes withheld than was reported by the payers.  I could not disagree with what the IRS showed, so I paid.  That was also the advice of my brother-in-law, a retired treasury agent, who said that he does the same when similar situations arise in his state or federal taxes because a) if it's only a few hundred dollars, it's not worth the fight; and  b) you can't win anyway.  (He had just similarly settled a tax problem with the state of New York.)

But this makes me wonder if the IRS is "discovering" errors late so they can charge interest at usurious rates, or if indeed, there was an error in calculating tax withholding in the 2005 TurboTax (or both).

Have 20 different businesses do your taxes and there will be 20 different results. If they want there to be an error, then there is an error.

I use Turbotax too and you are protected by their guarantee. If I recall they cover any additional money owed and will fight the IRS on your behalf if they feel nothing is owed.

IRS - what a useless waste of taxpayer's money!

I do work from home at my employer's convince. I have filled out the silly forms counting my office and a closet used to store work related stuff. That took a whopping 2 or 3 hundred dollars off. See, In the governments eyes, I should be married with kids by now, and I'm part of the top 10% that actually gets hit with all these taxes on the "rich". The govenrment punishes me because I don't do what they want me to.

Anyway, I put the question to the universe to guide me. I flipped a coin, allowing the universe to decide my response. The first was pay/don't pay, and the second was on interest, pay/don't pay. The coin came up pay on the tax (damit!), and don't pay on the interest. So I drafted the following letter going out in the next few hours. Let me know if you have any comments:

Dear Violent Gang Member,

Enclosed is a check for the money you have demanded I pay, which you back up with the threat of violence. I have not enclosed the $272 in interest charges you claim are due. I will not pay for your laziness and incompetence in reviewing your own paperwork. If 30 days is ample time for me to review your requests and respond, then surely, as the administrator of your own silly rules, 30 days is ample time for you to review the paperwork you demand from me.

Lastly, I would urge you to quit your job, and find productive work in society. I believe you will find work creating a voluntarily funded product or service much more rewarding. Plus you have the added peace of mind a clear conscious brings, knowing your not helping a violent gang of criminals enslave others. If I am forced to pay a portion of the proceeded of my labor, I am a slave. I may only be a part time slave, but I am still a slave to your bankrupt corporation.

Additionally, I am not aware of any binding contract between us to which I am party. Please provide a copy of the agreement creating the obligation to pay the fees you demand within 30 days upon receipt of this notice or with any further correspondence.

With Love,

By, Sam *******, Agent

Do not blame the Browns.
I see that some are.
This is the IRS doing this.
They want their way, and any person who exposes them will make them mad. Fight on!!
I may run for office here in NH because I have had enough of things like this!!!

Thank you Denis for recognizing the HUMOR that I intended with that comment but which I apparently lack! (I dunno, I'm laughing all the time when I'm here, having fun as it were..)

Anyway, you have to give Badnarik credit, unlike the rest of the humorless libertarians who won't support Ron Paul simply because he's got an R after his name!

By the way, I would support him if he had a D next to his name as well, and many D's are supporting him...which is amazing.

PS - wasn't it you Lloyd who said you could not help out with the RP display in Swanzey simply because we were going to set our materials down on the GOP table? I did not accuse you of worshipping at the alter of the DNC. Instead I realized that it was a joke and it was probably more like since you live far away and probably didn't feel like making the jaunt that weekend you weren't up to it.
