I'll be there rain or shine. There is the ski lodge building where some of the talks were last year. Others were out in a tent - all the exhibitors were outside. We'll see how the weather holds out!

Oh I was going to say we could go this time, but we're already doing something this Saturday.  Bummer.

By the way, there's a new alternative energy/building shop in Keene now - it's on Emerald St. not far from that little mall.  The place has lots of books and cool gadgets.  We got two used woodstoves there that the owner had altered for use in heating water.  He says they get used solar panels in from time to time, too.  He's got a very cool solar dehydrator! (Scott  ;D)

I was hoping the Sunfest would have more solar power hardware and systems, but I did run into other libertarian sun-seekers there!

Did you happen to attend the discussion on alternative energy in the yurt at 12:00? I thought it was great!

Missed it, but I have heard Laura and Gil Richardson present many times and I think they are very good. They're the founders of the New Hampshire Sustainable Energy Association (NHSEA - nhsea.org) and Laura was the president for 3 years. I probably should have dropped in to see how the presentation has developed. NHSEA is a must join group, I think, and they have several good workshops per year. You shouldn't miss the opportunity presented by the Green Buildings Open House tour that's coming up October 6th. You get to choose houses to tour and the solar home owners are always eager to brag about what they did to design and build their sustainable dwellings.

Kat Kanning

Added to the calendar.  I hope we can visit some, too  :)

Oy!  Nothing more irritating than libertarian nudists!

Yes, I am planning to visit some of these homes that day.

I did this last year and it was fun and informative. You get to ask the homeowners if the stuff really works, and what they'd do differently.

One place they had a huge fireplace in the center of the living room. It was supposed to be a deal where you have a large fire and the latent heat stored in the bricks heats the house all night long. It also had a bread oven in it, but they hadn't figured out how to use it properly.

Another place has been off-grid for over 20 years.

At another place they had large balls for composting. You add the stuff and close it up, then just roll them around a bit every day or so to mix it up.

That last place was in Deerfield right?  I went to that house.

They also have cabinets made from the wood that was logged for the space in the house.  100% off grid.
Their solar panel was big and in the way of the house but the house was freakin' cool.

I was hoping that my house was going to be on the tour this year. :'(

The list of houses is so long... Can anyone recommend any that are particularly interesting?
when I get back I will look thru the list and mention the ones that I have been in.

from an email from NHSEA:

NHSEA is pleased to announce that our Green Buildings Open House web page
is up and running. Take a look!

Planning to tour a set of homes in your area? The site is fully
searchable, and will give you a sense of the fantastic range of sustainable
home options on display for the day.

Visit: [http://www.nhsea.org/events.php]
http://www.nhsea.org/events.php#gboh ,  and let us know what you think. See
you on October 6!

These guys are just a few miles from my place. They are the ones that had the spherical composters.

This one is walking distance from my place. (Maybe 15 minutes walking)

We should probably have a gathering at my place after people see the local green houses.
