What would cause my laptop screen to be brighter on the battery and less bright when on AC?

I'd guess electricity.

You likely have power profiles that have separate settings for battery vs. AC. They appear to be the reverse of normal. If it's a Dell, you need to run QuickSet. Other brands might have an icon on the bottom right for power properties.

You should also find out if Windows is running a power setting program as well as your laptop having it's own power program. I had a problem with my old laptop that was fixed by turning off one of these power setting programs and then fixing the settings on the other one.
