Maybe you shouldn't move here. 18-20% tips really aren't uncommon here.

d_goddard

I think waitstaff who work as hard as they to in the Taproom, who have as professional a manager as they do in the Taproom, and who dress in uniforms as hot as they do in the Taproom, deserve at least 20%

I think there's some unnecessary elitism in your reply, as evidenced by your comment that you stopped waiting tables when you decided it was time to get a "real job." For many, it is a career, and one they are quite proud of.  The "real job" mentality is demeaning.  All jobs are real jobs, and I applaud anyone who works for their money for doing so.

menkenitinnh

Just for the record, would you mind listing "careers for accomplishing great things."

I've always thought the service was good in Murphy's.  The salads have had some skunky tasting cucumbers, though - like they were rotten.   :-\

For the record, if I were to be approached by management to discuss the reason I tipped what I did for whatever reason, whether large or small, I'd never return to that place, and I know Im not alone.

Just out of curiosity, how often does this happen to you?

Slinging drinks is fun and it pays well, and it does require the ability to anticipate peoples needs and the ability to maintain a good attitude, but its not exactly rocket science.

And in the grand scheme of things, even the worst bartender has done more for the advancement of the human race than Bill Gates. But that's another discussion entirely...

Neither is rocket science, for that matter.  See, e.g., NASA.

I did see waiters throw pennies at customers a few times though, big fun.  The unfortunate thing is that if a customer left you pocket change, its your fault.  If he was just cheap, hed have left you nothing, to get an insulting response, you had to really piss them off.

Having worked the whole gamut from cook to manager at a full service restaurant, I take note of and reward good service. Depending on the type of establishment and the size of the bill, I usually tip 20%. Sometimes 15% in an expensive place, because a server doesn't work any harder bringing me expensive food than they do if the food is cheap. But that would assume the same level of service, and it's unusual to get Denny's-level service at Tony Romano's.

For really good service, I go to 25%. On a small tab (like one drink, or a drink and appetizer), I will go to 50% or even 100%.

I have never ever not left a tip. As you say, servers chalk that up to you just being a jerk who doesn't tip. On rare occasions with truly horrendous service, I've left two pennies as a way of making a point. Let me say that this has only happened 2-3 times in 25 years, only when it was the fault of the server (not the cooks, and not the manager for under-scheduling), and only when there was no manager in sight to complain to, and no one to flag down to ask for a manager.

Engineering is a fine profession, but certainly not for everybody, by choice.  I'm sure I could have done it
I finally caught Rearden talking out of his ass :)

The Mayor is confirmed for 11:30am at Murphy's for this Saturday's MVP meeting.
Is he coming to apologize for how his heavies have treated some of us?

Russell Kanning

I like the service at Murphy's. I like the sandwiches and the curly fries. :)

And Keith is doing so well at it that I'm thinking about going twice a week!

Ha, Denis, I'd like to see you carry a 6-table section on a Friday night.
The difference is -- I never suggested I could do your job.

 :peace:

Thanks, Beavis!

Unfortunately I have heard this nasty rumor that some of the servers at Murphy's Taproom don't seem to particularly care for the Taproom Tuesday crowd. I couldn't begin to guess why.
