Its a hamiltonian ideal derived from his infatuation with the European monarchies.
Money of that time was currency and commodity in one, imposed by central government rule through the power of taxation and tender.

The US could return to this ideal, but would need to impose a strict government regulation on the trade of the underlying commodity setting its price.

Recent News from U.C. Berkeley:

10,000 on campus glued to "ObamaTron" (video)

On Tuesday, January 20, Sproul Plaza overflowed as more than 10,000 students, faculty, alumni, and members of the local community gathered to watch a live broadcast of the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The event, which was made possible by a private donor, set a crowd record — surpassing even Martin Luther King Jr.'s appearance at Sproul in December 1964.

It was really weird, a couple days ago I turned the news on and there was a speech from Obama on there, his voice sounded like it was echoing, (sp?), like crazy.   I quickly turned it off in case it was a hypnotic thing or something.  :dontknow:

"Let them eat cake", updated for the 21st century:

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants," Obama said with a laugh as she spoke before a crowd of business executives meeting today during a "Corporate Voices for Working Families" conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Including the chiefs-of-staff and personal assistants. Wow! Michelle Obama has solved the unemployment problem!

Obama welcomes bill to regulate tobacco

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama said Friday he looked forward to signing a bill that would give the Food and Drug Administration power to regulate the manufacturing, marketing and sale of tobacco.

He said the bill was a "long time coming," and said he was pleased that the House of Representatives and Senate acted "swiftly" in passing it....

The legislation would give the FDA power to ban candy and fruit-flavored cigarettes, widely considered appealing to first-time smokers, including youths. It would prohibit tobacco companies from using terms such as "low tar," "light" or "mild," require larger warning labels on packages, and restrict advertising of tobacco products.

It doesn't matter how big the warnings on the cigarettes are; you could have a black pack, with a skull and crossbones on the front, called TUMORS, and smokers would be around the block going, "I can't wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet ya get a tumor as soon as you light up!" -- Denis Leary

Interestingly, President Obama is (or recently was) a smoker.
