I have a personal mail box (PMB) and "forget" to identify it as such - so it looks like a street address with an apartment number.  That way I don't get any grief from every pimple-faced cashier who whines "but I neeeeeeeed an address or I can't accept your cheeeeeeeeck!!!" but he also can't show up at my house later if he thinks I'm cute.

PMBs are awesome.  The only government agency that has ever figured out that it was not my home address was the supervisor of elections.  I was shocked when they called me to tell me they needed another address!

I even thought about having two - one I actually use, and one in my home jurisdiction so I can pretend it's my residence address for purposes of registering vehicles, etc.

My license has mailing address on the front, and had my home address on the back. It was listed as "Legal address"

Maybe because there's no mail delivery in my town, so the mailing address is a PO Box?

I now have a 60-day temporary NH DL with my mailing address on the front and the back section after "Legal address" is blank. I'm not sure what happened in your case, Matt. I suggest paying the DMV office a visit and ask to see the form you filled out to get your license. If they still have the form, and you did check the box to not have your home address on there, you could demand they fix their mistake. Also, if you opted out of having your SSN saved in "department records" you could tell them to shred the form since it would have your SSN on it. The RSA doesn't specify electronic records versus paper records, so technically they'd be breaking the law by keeping a form on file containing your SSN.

Based on the reports I've come across of the DMV breaking the law by not honoring the opt-out choices on the driver's license form, I plan to politely pester these people to make sure they've honored my choices to delete my SSN and photo from their records. I don't know how successful I will be, but I didn't move up here to be a good little sheep. I encourage my liberty-loving friends (who choose to get a license) to be just as persistent.

I'm working on a NH Driver Privacy Primer/FAQ to help us all navigate the bureaucracy.

Do you guys know if one has to do all this at a dmv in the district where they live?  or can one use a dmv in a different part of the state?

It appears you can go to an office in another part of the state.

From http://www.nh.gov/safety/dmv/driverlic/answers.html

Q.    I HAVE LOST OR MISPLACED MY DRIVER LICENSE. HOW CAN I OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT?
     A.    Complete an APPLICATION FOR DRIVER LICENSE (DSMV 450) and submit along with a fee of $10.00. Appear at the DMV, Concord, or any substation. Non-US Citizens must appear at the Concord office.

Additionally, since certain substations are closed on certain days of the week, I don't see how they could justify denying service to someone from another region.

I took a knife and scratched into the magnetic strip "LIBERTY" and the anarcho-capitalist symbol. Then I got a strong magnet and screwed it up even more.

I'm wondering if there are any forms of photo/age ID that are issued by private companies. I'd much rather use a private license rather than have to show my state-issued one to every boot-strap licking cog in the wheel.

Sounds like an idea for a business.  I'd buy one.

Legally, nobody can accept any non-government ID as age verification. This is why I kept calling it civil disobedience... because a vendor accepting it as age verificaion for alcohol or tobacco, or for anything by anybody really, is not "legal".

To be honest, that seems like quite a roundabout, and potentially rather expensive, way to get the issue resolved, but I appreciate the ass-kickin' attutue.

Since we're chapter-and-versing, it turns out the NH laws with respect to the DMV and privacy are pretty damn good!

Quote from: RSA263.40
RSA 263:40
...
(c) The application form for an initial driver's license or a renewal of a driver's license shall include a box to check off if the applicant does not wish to have his or her social security number appear on the license, a box to check off if the applicant wishes to have his or her mailing address appear on the license instead of his or her home address, and a box to check off if the applicant does not wish to have his or her computerized image, likeness, or photograph retained in the records of the department of safety.
...

You don't have to show your SSN, or your real address.
You can tell them not to keep your photo on file.

Info on how the Real-ID act would conflict with this, and the rest of the above RSA, are in my analysis:

I thought PMBs have become less private. True?

The first article claims the post office won't deliver to a PMB without "PMB", but that is not the case.  I NEVER put PMB on my address.

You do have to fill out a form and show a driver's license to get the box in the first place.  However, it's a simple matter to get your driver's license to reflect your PMB address.  Once your license says you live at your mailbox, virtually any other bureaucracy will think that's where you live.

And of course, you can use that driver's license to open another PMB somewhere else.  :)

Naturally, you may be breaking "laws" in the process, but people in search of privacy shouldn't be caring about that.  If a cop figures out that is not a real liveable address on your license (unlikely to happen unless you volunteer the info or the cop himself happens to have a box at that location), you could try telling him you're homeless.

Or challenging his right to obtain that information. After all, you have provided a valid DL!

One thing to consider in this, for those who care about buying firearms from licensed dealers, is that ATF requires purchasers to have a current, valid state-issued ID with a physical address. That's been a problem for people in the country who live on rural routes, where  "9-1-1 addresses" haven't been issued yet.
