500 Students Join Free State Project! (the facebook group)

My fellow Porcupines,

About a week or so ago, facebook.com, an extremely popular networking site similar to Myspace.com, opened up its "groups" section to allow the creation of "Global Groups".  Before this, a student or former student could only create a group (e.g. Free State Project) at his or her respective school.  With global groups, I was able to create a Free State Project group and invite hundreds of self-identified libertarians from around the country and beyond.

After sending about 900 targeted invitations over the past week to join my group, I'm rapidly approaching 500 members!  The group page contains only the basics---the logo, some pictures, a three paragraph description, and a message board for students to post questions.  I was sure to note in the description that the group is open to active members, interested friends, and all others simply intrigued by the idea of working to create a free state.

Obviously the popularity of my facebook group among libertarian students doesn't mean that students will soon be flooding New Hampshire.  However, it does mean that our unique message of acting rather than talking is very appealing to students so displeased with the LP and the direction of America.  I posted links to this site and to FSP.org so hopefully more and more students will begin surfing around asking questions.  As the group continues to grow larger and more interactive, I'm sure we'll be seeing more and more college students looking for jobs in the Free State.

Ragnar,

You, sir, just rocked my world :)

P.S. When do I get my gold back?  :icon_pirat:

The FSP can do whatever it wants.  As for me....

Fluff and Stuff

Good work, I joined Facebook months ago and have been thinking of getting started but it just takes so much more work the Myspace and offers so much less, I never got around to it.  However, now that it is starting to become more useful, I'll go ahead and get a basic set-up.  Thanks for your work.

That's cool. I refuse to use Facebook/MySpace/etc for a variety of reasons, but I just got a friend to join the group in my stead so keep up the good work ;).

wow, nice work!

Yeah, Dada, I feel the same way... except some of us "oldsters" are giving the Socialists and Fascists a serious ass-kicking here in Concord!  >:D

I'd join but I'm not into the facebook/myspace thing. Good job on the recruits though.

The global "College Libertarian" group has over 1700 members and is beginning to plan some large meeting or event on the East Coast. I suggested Porkfest next summer with another meeting in Boston or Southern New Hampshire but there seems to be more interest in either NYC or DC.  There's a good chance, given the high volume of libertarian thinkers in the Ivy League, that a large libertarian conference/event will take place around Boston and another event in DC and/or NYC.

I understand why many people are put off by networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook but you can't ignore the huge impact this tool can provide to any movement.  If anything interesting happens, such as a student joining FSP, I'll be sure to spread the good news here first.

I'm a student, but I don't voluntarily put my private info online for the government and employers to see. But, let me know of any updates plus the college libertarian convention.
