Very beautiful. Dartmouth area porcs raise your hands?

(I'm not from the area, but I've been. I kind of wanted first post in a subforum though :P)

I remember driving up to Dartmouth College about . . . geez, 5 years ago already? . . . to take a tour when I was doing the college admissions thing.  I remember driving, and driving, and driving through the woods on a highway and then, in the middle of nowhere, seeing a freakin' car dealership.  It seemed so surreal at the time.  And the college itself seemed like it was just plopped in the middle of a small town, like the one from Gilmore Girls (in high school, it was my guilty, shameful pleasure).  Is the entire area like that -- just woods, huge car dealerships, and small-town feel?   :D

Braddogg... I live in the Darmouth area and I don't get that impression.  There are definitely places where you can live out in the woods if you want to, but near DHMC and Dartmouth there are lots of other stores (besides car dealerships :D).  The first time I visited was summer of 2005, though, so I don't know how it compares to before.  There were lots of places to hike and go kayaking, parks, and a couple of really nice gyms.  But especially near the hospital it is full of stores and businesses.  Generally the housing prices and the amount of development drop off exponentially with distance from Dartmouth and DHMC.

Interestingly enough, there have been quite a few times since I moved when I tried to get mapquest directions, and they would tell me to take "Dartmouth College Highway" to get someplace.  Several roads were called "Dartmouth College Highway" and they were not continuous, which leads me to believe that Dartmouth actually owns some of the roads around there!  Pretty cool, huh?

Email me if you want to know anything more specific!

They probably use to connect and lead to Dartmouth.

I would say the town grew up around Dartmouth ... not that the college was plopped into the middle of something. :)

So are you porcupines gunna start up a monthly meeting in the area? It is sorely needed. There are plenty of you guys up there, but you mostly don't know about each other.

Russell,
That's a great idea.  You are right, I don't really know anybody. :D

So is anybody free on Sunday 1/14 for lunch?  Anybody like sushi/sashimi? [Raises hand]  I know a great place: http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=10379974 ... I'm game as long as at least one other person is interested!  Let me know.

Sounds like a great place. But being in Wisconsin I won't make it this time around. :(

the_liberty_belle

Next time, error. :)
If you're planning to move to the Dartmouth area let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Thanks. Actually I'm moving to Keene but I'll be finding any excuse I can to travel around the state. :)

having someone willing to get the ball rolling is all it takes. Eventually you can have a thriving group going, but someone has to go first.

It's been years since I last had Japanese food, which is really a cryin' shame.

There's a dartmouth area porcs yahoo group, also, where you might find people interested in meeting:

Cool!  Thanks Kat, I joined the Yahoo group and I'll post there to see if anyone wants to come.

David, you should come up 1/14 if you're free, maybe some others will want to join us too!
