It's starting to get cool up here already, so it's about time to go winter clothes shopping and I'd like to make sure I don't forget anything. I've started to compile a list in my head of things I will need to stay warm in the winter.

Long sleeved shirts
Gloves
Hats
Jacket
Boots

Thermal underwear?
Warm socks?
Scarf?

How crazy do I need to go? Also, where is the best place to buy this kind of stuff?

You forgot Feburary reservations in the Flowda Keys.  ;D

Sometimes layering can be better than a big puffy coat.  I've done that and have gotten thru several winters with a medium weight jacket, including protesting in Hampton in 6 degree weather.

thermal underwear is a must if you are going to spend long periods of time outside.

Kat Kanning

I like warm socks...or two pairs.

I don't think I'll be going back to Florida for a long time.

:-*  Welcome HOME!

Head, hands, feet.

Keep them warm, and the rest of you stays warm.

Like Lloyd said: layer. Medium coat over light jacket over flannel shirt over longjohns, and you're set for almost anything.

My memory is that about a dozen of did this (for how many hours?) and it was about 4 degrees with a good breeze.   ;D  We had much fun!
Hey, some folks were even playing in the snow!  (Ask Kira.)
We enjoy the outdoors year round.  Yes, yes we do have seasons here; and they are all GREAT.
I recomend going to the thrift store and getting several things until you find what works best for you in various conditions.  It is cheep, and it is easy!

Another thing I forgot: block the wind, and block the water. Fortunately, most materials that block one, block the other.

You can be dressed for very moderate weather, throw on a single Goretex layer, and be set for much more severe weather.

Wind and water are your enemies when it comes to winter warmth.

I spent three winters in Germany before the Army discovered Goretex. Not that I'm bitter...  >:( ... but I do know the limitations of cotton twill.

jeans, socks shoes and a windbreaker :p

Okay get a two layer or more jacket with some special advertised cold-blocking feature. Drop $100-$200 on it (anything more is a ripoff or overkill, anything less is inadequate), that's not a lot since you'll wear it 5+ years hopefully. I have a nice land's end jacket.

Get a winter hat that covers your ears, and gloves... gloves dont have to be great if you won't be doing too much outside.

Winter pants that go over your normal ones are nice as well.

I've never gotten used to wool socks ... I just let my feet freeze.

Nor scarves... a good balaclava works better.

That's more than I've ever worn at once even up here where I am, one of the coldest places in NH in the winter. For example I've waited for the school bus at -52 degrees.

Also, keping your torso warm will go along way towards keeping your extremeties warm, thus the popularity of vests, particularly the insulated ones.

Scarry knitted thing you pull over your head and only your eyes, nose and mouth show.  Think bankrobber/terrorist.

Appreciate all the advice; where would be the best place to buy this stuff?

Wal-mart

The best coat/jacket:

ECWCS (EXTENDED COLD WEATHER CLOTHING SYSTEM). I'd go for black, cus I don't want to look like a douche bag walking around in camo all the time. It is pretty lightweight, and can double as a raincoat when it's not cold if you don't use a liner....but they are expensive...

You can probably find a better price if you google for ECWCS Parka
