As Russell said, though, they've arrested people protesting on public sidewalks before. I think the private property issues are secondary here, and serving as a distraction—if the cops couldn't've used that as an excuse for arrest, they would've tried to find something else, like "blocking a public sidewalk."

And I want to reiterate my strong belief that the two police acts were entirely different from one another.

One is justice.  The other is not.

That is also a completely unrelated type of police action.  You're changing the subject.

I started this thread to post videos and articles about manchester cops.

That is also a completely unrelated type of police action.  You're changing the subject.

I was actually thinking of that incident when I was writing this comment. First they went after him for openly carrying, then they tried the "blocking a sidewalk" excuse, then it was bitching about videoing them without permission, then it was about affixing a "protest" sign (in actuality an advertisement put up by the Girl Scouts for a car wash!) to a public utility pole.

The would is full of criminals, but if you poke sticks at them, you are guaranteed a response.  As hypocritical as Benito (guiliani) is, if you do not respect his claims of property, it makes it hard for you to ask others to respect your claims.

That's why we made him move to CA.  ;D

Few years back at the Mall of NH, seven activists were arrested in Mall common area for leafleting mall patrons to make them aware of sweatshop operations overseas branding Disney garments.

The issue become was the mall common area private property or not.  The seven were vindicated.

Whether it is a public debate at a private campus or a private forum espousing to be non-political---there is a fine line when it comes to censorship of free speech being broadcast into public domain.

A couple things...
Blocking a sidewalk... if you are actually blocking it from someone's use would hold up in court... else the judge would laugh. Affixing something to a utility pole (PSNH) would require their consent to prosecute. (I'm not sure if you meant a city lightpost)

Cops rarely arrest protesters with the intent of it ever going to court: The point is usually to get them to stop protesting through whatever bogus charges are necessary, then drop the charges a few hours or days later.

(On rewatching the video, it actually does appear to be a light post, either for the traffic light or a streetlight, not a utility pole.)

Point well taken.
The officer relies on the protesters fear of arrest. This only works because modern society and the media forgot that an arrest or 'taking of public custody' is just a supposition of wrongdoing. That's a mindset that needs changing.

Unfortunately the first post in this thread was actually a reply in another thread, so the context is gone.

Furthermore, the moderator that split it off used a misleading subject header (since fixed) that did not go with the lead post in this new thread.
