For quite a while, I could only get it to go clockwise. Apparently that's what came "naturally". With some effort I was finally able to switch it back and forth. I wonder if I've become somewhat more right-brained lately due to taking up drawing so much. I would have guessed I was more left-brained prior to that. I know my visual memory has improved significantly since I took up the cartoon website. I find myself analyzing shapes of objects, eyes, noses, body types, etc., and basically noticing details I wouldn't have before, particularly when I'm seeing other people's cartoons. I also withdrew from politics after I had been working on the cartoon for a couple of months. Then again, I'm probably over-analyzing, but it's fun to think about.

Wow, neat!   :)

she's spinning like a mo fo clockwise for me. I can't see any possibility of getting her to spin the other way. i've stared at it for like 10 mins.

i was reading a book on left-handedness, and the common myth is that lefties use their right brain, right-handed people use their left brain. the research shows that we both use both hemispheres, it's just a question of which side is dominant, and only about 30% of lefties are right-brain dominant. because the book is specifically about lefties, it didn't tell me the percentage of right-handed people that are right-brain dominant, but that would be interesting.

Here's a thought. I used my analytical thinking (left side) to determine how the illusion works which helped me to make it switch directions in my mind. On the other hand, being able to picture the woman in three dimensions (right side) might also help someone to analyze it and make it spin the other way. In reality, the image represents both- a woman spinning clockwise AND counter-clockwise, so it's just a matter of which one your brain "chooses". Presumably, that depends on your dominance. I'm somewhat skeptical. It might be kind of random.

Caleb

I don't think it's random, because people are not just handed, they are sided. What I found interesting from this book is seeing the different ways that people are sided. For instance, eye dominance:

Look into the distance. Choose something to point at and, keeping both eyes open, point at it. Now hold your hand steady, and close first your left eye. Then open your left eye and close your right eye.

You should find that your finger is aimed properly with one eye, and offset with the other eye. The eye which sees the finger aimed properly is the dominant eye.

What's curious is that humans are the only animal that we know of that are sided like this.

I didn't mean that sidedness is random. I meant that this test of it might be more random. I do, however, think it's probably a bit fuzzy and some people are probably a lot more "even" than others.

There are a few free tests on the internet to determine dominance of hemispheres and visual/audio stimulus. Very few of us are actually 'balanced'... most likely for evolutionary reasons. It seems to create a great deal of indecision and complexity unnecessary for daily survival.

If your wondering, I'm both left and right handed depending on the situation. I write with my left, but catch/bat/pitch right handed. I fire a handgun right-handed, but a rifle left-handed. I can switch, but the lack of dominance in each activity shows through.

Puke

I didn't have any problem getting it to spin either way.
Then my ears started bleeding and I passed out.  :(

MTPorcupine3

Are you guys serious? She's clearly spinning counter clockwise!

Raineyrocks

She was spinning both ways for me as I was sitting here wondering where the quiz button was.  So that is the quiz to see which way you see her spin?

MTPorcupine3

The only way I can see her spinning clockwise is if I look at her from underneath.

Hmm... That would explain some things. I'm really bad at making decisions!

Oh, and Rainey, you're a freak.  ;) ;D

Each time I would blink she would change direction.
Then again I have always had problems with right and left.
It is a neat little test.  Most people are one sided in general.  I'm not.  Never have been.
I know I 'm left eye dominant but I have retrained my right eye to shoot with and use a loupe.  I still am Left eye dominant when using binoculars or looking around in general.
I'm right handed but will switch and use my left hand when my right hand tires out.  This used to freak the other jewelers out when I worked in manufacturing.  I found out most jewelers have never seen anyone do this.
People have a dominant leg also but most people never think about it.  I've switched legs back and forth depending on which one I injured this time.  :(

You know this makes me think.  I'm at a cross road in my life right now maybe I should explore more of the artist in me.  I haven't really done that since I left college.

That's okay as long as I'm a super freak! ;D  I guess this means that both sides of my brain work together, right/left, (ha, ha)?  If so it sounds like a good thing to me! :D
