So, in all the one-liners back and forth without quoting others, I've lost track...

If I wanted a host with PHP so that I could host a forum (low volume), which of the hosting companies includes things like PHP and SQL and CGI at a low price?

A number of email addresses with SMTP and POP would be nice, too...

Kevin

Unless you need GBs of space, a Mars plan at hostingbegin.com has the forums, etc you need..  I have never created a site that needed more than that except for my radio podcasting which has huge files to store. The forum is there and installs with a click....
I just set up this one:

Nice page, Jane.

Thanks Scott...I've been working with this fellow all week.

These folks are not young, and have no clue how to make a website. I can help the groups get started but I can't make and maintain the site. So I figured by having them use this, they can get their articles and information out to the voters by simply doing something akin to posting an email...

Then later if they get a full service webmaster they can do regular site pages...but for now, this seemed to me to be the best solution so that neophytes can get the word out to the voters without spending hundreds on stamps and such.

I set up three such sites this week alone...........whew!  At least the towns are now getting wise and forming these groups.

Thanks, Jane. I like the look and features of SMF better than phpBB, but I'd be willing to settle since they've already got it in place.

For several years, I've toyed with the idea of setting up a site for my fraternity alumni (just from my chapter). The chapter is now closed, but the alumni stay in touch and have an annual campout/reunion/drunken-guys-weekend every spring. I own our mailing list, but listserv ain't what it used to be since Yahoo took over.

Actually phpBB is quite nice, easy to set up and you can have a Mailman mailing list too, which is also offered and a whole lot nicer and simpler with no ads than that Yahoo crapola!
You can make it read only or postable by members.
There is unlimited emails so your guys could have prestige addresses as we call them, and there is even a chat function.
Then there are numerous CMS programs in there, and whew, custom error pages, parking domains, the works! I can't think of anything else you'd want that isn't there.

Jane, I love it when you talk dirty.  ;D

Will you hold my hand while I lose my domain cherry?

I think you can get SMF forums with a click at godaddy.

Okay, I bought the domain, and installed phpBB, then it takes me to a phpBB page and tells me to be sure to delete a couple of directories. But I have no clue where those directories are. Help?

WHOA!!! What say? Please email me, I can't be coming to this board to help you.
I know what you are talking about....but I forgot where they are....but I can probably help you find them... if you tell me their names, which you do not want to do publicly........ for security reasons.

Did you sign up for Mars/Linux with Hosting Begin? Cool beans!

You industry types know the best deals.  Why is it though when you look at some of the best deal sites, that the graphic pixels (color for the rest of us) appear degraded.

Not sure what that means? I'm a retired art/first grade teacher....

QuoteAlso, has anyone had any problem with servers in China, Japan or Korea?   Now that China has paid Yahoo and Google search engines to search out, identify and jail peoples promoting internal regime change, the problem has become worldwide.

Time for some boycotting of search engines....

My server is not overseas, but just far enough away that my enemies did not disturb operations when they slashed my cables outside my home. However, the people who run it are Asian and they are the best. Paul is my guy and I get treated well after all, having 100 sites with them and all.   :icon_pirat:

SMF is only available on Linux based hosting accounts. You can get something called ASP.NET Community on a windows based server. Anyone have an expereine with ASP. I use FrontPage for my site so I think I'm stuck on a windows server?

My Linux host has front page extensions, not that I would ever use them. UGH
