Where's the pickel barrell?  I didn't see anyplace where we could sit around and pass the jug of 'Old Stump Blower'!  What the Hell kind of general Store is this?

AlanM

Ooooh! A pickle barrel! Yum. Love those sour pickles.

Here's a new song from Shorty Dawkins. I'll post it on the website as soon as I finish preparing the MIDI.

The Day Our Town Became Free
by Shorty Dawkins

Long ago, it was, when the Land was new,
The folks in my Town, I mean all not a few,
Took a pledge, a vow never to obey,
Any government that's based on mere majority.

What this vow it said, we won't be led,
We'll make our own minds, on what rules, and what kind.
And they all agreed unanimity
Was much better than imposed servility.

Yes, they knew the State would not like this vow,
They'd send in their forces to crush it and how.
But the folks in my Town, they stood their ground,
And declared their little town a free community.

When the forces came, in the States name,
They sought to arrest, all the leaders to test,
The resolve of the towns-folk who would be free,
They did not expect to face the whole community.

On the village green, all the towns-folk stood,
The old, and the young, all the able that could,
And those towns-folk stood for their liberty,
Knowing freedom needs protection from all tyranny.

Then the Captain of the State's proud force,
He read a decree, as he sat on his horse.
The decree, it said they could not be free,
They were subjects of the State, 'twas right to be.

It was Bucksaw Upton who gave reply,
"I stand here to tell you I'm free and here's why,
There's no man on this earth, for all he's worth,
Has a right to tell another how to live his life."

Then the Captain smiled, with steely eye,
"It's quaint to believe that you can remain free,
It's the State, don't you see, that grants Liberty.
Now disperse you towns-folk, I have the authority.

Still the towns-folk stood on the Green that day,
Two hundred or more who would not turn away.
Face to face, they stood for a long, long while,
Till Ole Bucksaw he stepped forward on his face a smile.

"If you start a row, won't matter how,
There'll be lots of bodies to bury and how.
So, why don't you turn and depart as friends,
You can say you did your job, and that's the end."

Well, the Captain liked what ole Bucksaw said,
"I'll tell them we fought and the whole town is dead.
They won't come, they won't see, if I speak true,
They have lots of silly laws and rules that they must do."

Then his Sergeant spoke, "Is this a joke?
If not, then I think I speak for all the blokes.
We don't long for a fight, just to show our might,
From our point of view what this man said, it seems all right."

From that day, the town, it did not exist,
The State thought it gone, and the folks were not missed.
If you ask to find Upton's Corners town,
All the folks north of the notches will give you a frown.

All the folks will say, it's gone away,
They will tell you stories, reliving the day,
When the folks in town stood for Liberty,
But the State refused to let the town be free.

Yes, the folks, they like to relate this tale,
And watch just to see if you start to turn pale.
But they won't tell you how to find the place,
Far as their concerned the town is gone without a trace.

Yet the town exists, it's filled with folks,
They live and they're free, with no chains and no yokes.
With no State telling them how to live their lives,
Still the folks in Upton's Corners live without much strife.

Here's a bit of interesting news. Phil Wallis wants me to put together a Shorty Dawkins Show and take it out to Wisconsin. Shorty's going big-time!  8) Perhaps we could do it here after I do the tryout in Wisconsin. Maybe a fund-raiser for the LSF.
